Pemican, Trail Blazing and Rugs

I would love to be able to make pemican - it keeps alot longer and has cold weather calories, I would also love to be able to blaze trails - its not like its a specialized skill set, and all those rugs/floor mats.  I'm dying here - why can I pick one up and make something of it?  My grandfather had a little fire wind shield he cobbled out of a floor mat and whatever random sticks of wood he had around.  Wouldn't stop a blizzard, but helped getting a field fire going in a wind.  When it wasn't windy he sat on the mat to keep his backside from getting cold and wet
