What are you playing now?

I thought it would be interesting to hear what games people are playing at the moment. I'm playing Remember Me, which I thought I would never get, because it so obviously is a game I won't be able to play through. However, I subscribed to PS+ some time ago and the game is one of November's free games, so there was no reason not to check, if I was right or wrong.

I really like the story and the main character, and even the anticipated problem, too complicated controls, hasn't been that bad so far. Of course I'm playing at the easiest level, so I have at least a chance to win the fights, which are the main problem in this (and so many other) games. I'm just not good at them and I hate the fact that often you have a great story, but need to win boss fights at the end of chapters in order to find out more.

I understand that the fights are the main thing for many, but there really should be alternative ways of progressing. By all means give the fighters more trophies and extra skills and whatever, or even punish me for not fighting, but give me a way to get a bit further in the game. I wouldn't mind the last boss fight being mandatory as long as I had a chance of getting at least that far.

Right now, I'm nearing the end of chapter 2 and have cleared 2/3 of the boss fight with the help of a gameplay guide. I got to the beginning of the fight episode without the guide, but there was no way to win the fight without some help. Even with that, it'll take a few tries to pass the final stage.

Not playing much at the moment. Just finished Far Cry 3 last week. I've been playing a few Civ 5 lan games with my wife and Ticket To Ride with my wife and daughter (we own both the board game and video game versions, a lot less to put away with the video game).

I've been playing SimIsle: Missions in the Rainforest. A rather obscure title published (but not developed) by Maxis in 1995.A commercial failure, it's still a pretty decent game..... Superficially similar in concept to Tropico (which came out a full 6 years later), being a simulator game where you control an island in the tropics.... but at the same time incredibly different, with a focus on ecology, supply chain management, and a surprisingly good set of disasters and special events. It's also based on the Philippines/Southeast Asia region, rather than latin america. And it has drug-growing in it, albeit only in one scenario from what I can tell. Gave you the option to ignore the drug cartel that had moved into the island, shut it down (risking having your agent getting mailed back in pieces), or take a cut of the profits to help boost your treasury. It also has possibly the best soundtrack I've ever heard in a game, written by Harry Holmwood.

I managed to get my old copy working again through DOSbox last week (not easy, since finding a computer that can actually read the old CD-ROM was rather tricky)...and so I'm enjoying some nostalgia. This is the game that got me into gaming in the first place, and set me on the path to my current specialisations at university (Ecology/Conservation & Tourism)...so I've got something of a fondness for the old thing.

....of course, it's still a 1995 second-rate simulation game running on DOS, so it's devilishly hard and is pretty light on features and graphics compared to anything from more recent times. And the tutorial notably doesn't teach you how to make money. It's based entirely around getting resources and setting up supply lines, which is extremely important....but if you run out of the ingame cash ("EMU"), it's a game-over. And the tutorial scenarios basically solve this problem by giving vast sums of cash and letting the player blast through the lessons before it runs out. It's a bit heavy on the easter-eggs as well given how many main features it has as well. Still, for all its failings, it's a superb little game at times, and it's the sort of game that could really use a spiritual successor....... to look at all the neat ideas the developers had (and this game has fantastic ideas), and make a game that uses them to the full.

@dalec started brothers yesterday (only game i bought during the last steam sale) and played it for almost an hour last night - beautiful game! took me some time to figure out the unique controls (one of the two brothers often just ran against a stonewall), but the concept behind the controls is so awesome when you finally get the hang of it... (play with a pad! it's a must, seriously). love the atmosphere so far too. great colours, reminds me of childhood fable storys.

beside that, i am almost finished with the swapper, i don't want it to be over... (love that game so much!)

also the stanley parable. man, i've finished it already like 20 times and still haven't seen anything. this "game" is so good. loved the mod, but this one is a blast. highly recommended, especially when you are a developer for mods or games, interested in the human psyche, like good humor and something different. ;)

on my ps3 i am still playing the last of us multiplayer (got the season pass, first time ever i bought dlc for any game... but the last of us managed to force me just because it's so, so, so damn good) - very much fun and addictive imho. can't wait for the singleplayer dlc at the end of 2013 or early 2014...

@blue_chill i'll think i gonna check the fables comics before playing this one. i googled it some time ago and the covers alone are worth it buying them! :D if you haven't checked them out yet, google them. so good...

Im not a big Xbox gamer by any means, not like my 10yr old son in Minecraft and this amazing world with things he knows he will never buy but can make them . . .

I like to sit back with my MBP on my lap and play things like, Machinarium, Limbo, Cubemen 2, The Cave and Stackings from DoubleFine Productions . . . Love Stackings, running around as a Russian Stacking Doll . . . Lol Im more of the Adventure /Puzzle gamer where i need to think through something to work it out, instead of the Halo/ME/COD type games, although i have played through a few of the COD games, but once they are $15 new at EB Games and not $99 first release. I can wait, because they don't excite me enough to spend that money.

Ohhh and I'm playing TLD in my head as i sleep dreaming about it, whats my next move . . . . .

just finished brothers... truly wonderful experience.

only read when you've finished it:

[spoil]my left hand really felt useless while playing the epiloge, great design! also the scene where the small brother had to swim, took me some time to find out what to do... :)

awesome, varied mapping and great score too.

sadly, my expectations where a bit high because of all the praise and good reviews... some people sayed it was the best video game experience they ever had, that they cried, laughed and had been amazed by it... i couldn't help but kept "the last of us" in my mind at the end - and man, did that game let me go through all the above mentioned feelings, plus even more.

brothers amazed my often, the landscape was really beautiful and the puzzles not hard but often very clever regarding the controls - bot on the emotional side... it didn't hit me like i thought it might do. none the less a really good game! :)[/spoil]

@TattooedMac regarding your game taste you should have a look at trine 1 & 2 (great physics sidescroller puzzle game with beautiful vivid colours - great fun in coop too!), braid (awesome indie title with beautifully brush strokes graphics, where you have to manipulate time to solve puzzles, also sidescroller), deadlight (limbo + the walking dead + alan wake...), kentucky route zero (oldschool point & click style adventure with a "twilight zone", twin peaks feel to it... fantastic art direction and design too)...

but i bet most of them are already played through by you (hopefully ;)).

@KOPFSTOFF, you've solved a problem for me. I remembered reading an intriguing review, remembered the pictures in the review, but couldn't get the game's name in my head, no matter how hard I tried. It's Kentucky Route Zero. I realized that the moment I saw it written in your post. Now I can finally go and get it.

I actually managed to progress in Remember Me, only to get stuck (for now) with an even worse boss at the end of chapter 3. I'm also in the middle of another game, Beyond: Two Souls, and at least that's one I will be able to play through, because it actually has the alternative ways to progress I mentioned in my original post. You can fail missions and still continue the story. Some reviewers have listed this as a weak point, but I think it's great that you don't get stuck and can finish the story. The story just goes different routes depending on what you do/choose. I really think of this more in terms of the old joke about watching the movie second time and expecting a different result. With Beyond, it actually works to some degree.

I was replaying Borderlands 2 since I hadn't played any of the recent DLC. Tiny Tina DLC is by far the best one. The others are good, but get a bit boring as they get near the end.

Right now I'm playing ACIV. I almost swore off AC after ACIII, but I caved in and bought it. Already liking it more, but the series is no longer a favorite of mine -- mostly just AC fatigue.

I have not played Remember Me yet, because my notebook could not possibly shoulder it, but I have been following it closely; it looks gorgeous, the best example of French art I have seen in gaming yet.

I find myself playing mostly Boson-X lately — an endless runner thematically related to my work. :)

@Don_Reba, the game does demand a lot from the hardware. My PS3 is having trouble occasionally in showing the graphics right. The art is really the main reason I want to get further in the game, because I want to see more. Neo-Paris would be a fantastic place for free exploration.

@IndianaJonas, I've got the same problem now that I got new games from the Steam sale. Remember Me was getting a bit frustrating, so I decided to play some Deadlight as its difficulty seems more suitable for me (still dying a lot, but at least I'm progressing).

I've been playing through Sleeping Dogs and the DLC that goes with it. It was more entertaining than I expected it to be. Fighting and driving were simple to pick up and the story was enjoyable enough.

Otherwise, I have been playing through some of the indie games out there: Gone Home, The Stanley Parable, and Papers, Please.

Gone Home was a great story to unfold. As long as you don't go into it expecting an action-packed adventure. It is all about the story and discovery.

The Stanley Parable is ridiculous and I want to keep playing through to see what comes next. The dialogue is fantastic and it just makes me smile.

Papers, Please has been a pleasant surprise. I heard of the accolades it had received, so I decided to give it a shot. It has turned into a much more in-depth game than I anticipated. The story that builds as the days go on and the frustration of having to make difficult decisions for the betterment of your family and their survival versus that of everyone else.

It is great to see so many unique games coming out from indie developers. Next up for me is Spelunky now that I have a controller that will work with my computer!

Oh, it’s so unfair. I bought The Stanley Parable on Steam but the game won’t start. There is always an error message. My PC is too old, I guess. (That is why I love my PS3. No matter what, the games I buy are at least playable.) I want this special experience by myself and not through Let’s Play vids. Damn!

But at the very latest I buy a new PC for TLD.

I know what you mean about buying a new PC. I funded Star Citizen, as well, and my computer doesn't have the muscle to run it. Guess it's time to start saving.

@IndianaJones since "stanley" is based on the good old source and has pretty low minimum specs, i assume your hardware has to be at least older then the ps3 then? ;)

"stanley" needs a pentium 4, 2 gig ram and a 128mb video card with pixelshader 2.0 - the geforce 7600 gs for example, win xp 32 and dx9. "wolf among us" has the same specs beside the graphic card (geforce 205 minimum)... so i guess its your graphic card then.

oh and #firstworldproblems for sure, same here ofc. :D

@TarjaS glad i could help :)"route zero" is phenomenal. love the art direction and the atmosphere so much.

The demo displays about a frame per second in the menu on my laptop, which comfortably runs Thief 3 (I'm not bragging). Seems to be demanding of the video card.
