Sea to Summit New Years Challenge!!

Hotzn also found a method to improve looting times even further (you can enter a house, loot everything, memorize which places contain precious stuff, quit the game, reload it and only loot the right containers afterwards), but I didn't do this during my runs. Always thought it was random (and not predetermined) what items you loot - definitely another point that can be optimized!

Loot is randomized, but the game determines the loot found in the containers in a building the moment you enter the building and saves right after that. This was done to prevent people from reloading until they got the loot they wanted.

All I can say is "THANK GOODNESS" I work from home!! LOL This challenge has been almost obsessive!!

Nice time for your first run Nettaros!! Will post to Leaderboard! Also..... I will expand Leaderboard in "Stalker mode" to 25 spots! If I don't get any times listed in Pilgrim or Voyager mode in the next week, I will eliminate those leaderboards.

I added an account of my last trip to the screenshots post two days ago. But maybe that was a bad idea, as I don't know if anyone actually looked back to read it.

Pretty much sums up my experience and my strategies, I think. And not-so-different apparently from Scyzara, except for my aggressive shortcuts. And strict avoidance of wolves (why go through the coastal town?) Still don't really understand what affects times. I did what I did because it worked. The only real times I ever tracked across runs were time to TWM and time to Summit. Found the routes I did because I prefer moving in long straight lines. And avoiding known wolf hangouts. While I was able to get each time a couple hours faster, I don't really know where I found 8 more hours that last go-through. Especially with that persistent night blizzard at the end. But I did. So, it's possible.

Coffee is definitely the key to never sleeping. You could go more than three days without sleep I'm sure, but restored fatigue is definitely needed for rope climbing and there is not way I know to get to the summit without rope climbing. I'm guessing there is even more room for improvement in the game for those who seek it. An optimized coffee brewing formula; an best sprint profile; pre-cognizant looting of buildings; et al. I wait now to see someone claim the first 1 Day 7 Hour time finish.

Good luck. Stay warm. May all your falls be short and non-damaging. Cheers.

shoot i've been mia for a while, just noticed this challenge. Is this still ongoing? I'm gonna try to run it either way i guess. Props for coming up with this!

Don't worry, the leader board will stay up for folks to try any time they like ;)

Nice times NETTAROS and GELtaz ...... Glad you enjoyed the Challenge! Will ad your times to leader board.

I FINALLY hit the right balance of coffee, clothes, and weather!!

Came in with a 1 Day, 13 Hour, and 14 Minute run!! Will post pics as soon as I figure out how! LOL

All I can say once again, is "Hats Off" to you folks running this challenge 3 and 4 hours faster!!

I felt my run was pretty much spot on! I might be able to cut an hour, perhaps 2 at the Coastal Townsite, but the rest of my run, I really don't know where I could cut any time.

About the only thing I can figure is dropping my load another couple pounds, and virtually down to nothing but clothes, coffee, and flares on the way home, but that's about it! As it is, I was only carrying 27 pounds coming home.

Allright, finally found the time to finish that "promising run" I was talking about in my last post.

I tried to make use of every trick I knew (shortcuts, specific looting), drank every last bit of coffee I found, ran a whole lot and finally made it in 1d 5h 3min!

Obviously failed to travel the optimal route once more (walked 1,6 km more than selfless  ), but I definitely give up on further attempts. Pathfinding optimization just doesn't seem to be one of my talents - I'll thus gladly leave that honor to the king. ;)

That's just plain nuts Scyzara!!! Beating your already rediculously fast time by almost 10% :o

I'm dumbfounded on how you took 3 hours and 42 minutes off a time that I thought could only be beat by a few minutes at a time! WELL DONE!!

Thanks for your kind words, but this credit honestly doesn't go to me, but to those who found the route shortcuts and the looting trick. I merely carried out the theory. ^^

When I compared my last times at certain key points (leave townsite/reach TWM/reach summit) to my previous runs I found out that reload-looting saved me almost 2,5 hours and the two shortcuts another 30 minutes each. :)

As you can see only 12 minutes were truely my personal achievement (running/walking optimization with coffee).

Coffee Usage and benefits

For those of you wondering if coffee is beneficial or not in your challenge attempts, I did a little experiment in Paradise Valley.

I picked a nice calm day and ran around until I was fully drained of energy. I picked two spots to walk between to measure the time. I walked from the bridge by the quanset hut to the abandoned car at "end of the road" and it took me 37 game minutes without coffee each way.

Then I drank 1 cup of coffee and tried it again. By running as much as I could with the extra energy from the coffee, I made the same trip in 27 game minutes saving 10 minutes. I also did this traveling both ways.

So the travel benefits is a total wash! While you gain 10 minutes in travel time, you lose 10 minutes preparing the coffee so it completely evens out.

The only thing coffee helps you with is of course climbing ropes, and to keep your condition from slowly dropping from fatigue.

So I would only make enough coffee to get you up the ropes to the summit. Then, if you do make coffee at the summit, only make enough to get you through the "wolf gauntlets" in case you need to sprint for a short bit.

The other thing is....... try to make all the coffee you need to get to the summit before you leave Coastal Townsite if you are lucky enough to find enough coffee.

Taking water from the back of the toilets saves you from melting snow and boiling water which costs you almost a full hour for each 5 cups of coffee brewed!

The water you need to brew 5 cups of coffee weighs 4 pounds. Yet 5 cups of "brewed" coffee only weighs .22 pounds each cup, or 1.1 pounds for 5 cups.

The next test I want to do is to measure the travel times between two fixed points with different weight loads of 30, 40, 50, and 60 pounds!!

The last test.... walking those same fixed points with a headwind and tailwind and measuring the time.

I know!! .... I know!! ....... I need to get a life!! LOL :D

This statement is true for good weather conditions, but not in general. Headwinds and blizzards will slow you down considerably during the challenge if you simply ignore them. Both because they lower your movement speed and because they force you to light way more fires to warm up again.

As I've written: The strategy to boil coffee & run more (which I called strategy B) only becomes superior to the minimum amount of coffee boiled + only walking method (strategy A) if you have to walk through a blizzard or against headwind.

Boil coffee until the headwind/blizzard has ceased (or changed direction), then continue to move on, run a lot and drink your coffee. But I assume you're going to find that out during your own experiments as well. ;)

  • 1 month later...

I abandoned one run after getting lost in a blizzard in PV, and then made this one. 1 day, 23 hours, 41 minutes. I started at Hibernia processing, and probably took some longer than necessary detours to loot. There are probably shortcuts I'm not aware of, too. I only got one tin of coffee on the way to the plane, and got hit by a blizzard halfway up the mountain, so most of the time is resting between climbs to prevent exhaustion and wait out the blizzard. Sprinted all the way home. I'm fairly satisfied. Thanks for the great challenge!

Wow Lucid....Nice time!! I'm amazed you did it that fast with so little coffee. It usually takes me 6 cups of coffee to make it up the last rope!!
