Wolf-deer exploit

Hey guys,

Does anybody besides me do this? (I'm sure you do)

1) Go out on whatever lake is handy, where you can see a long ways.

2) Look around for a deer AND a wolf. (preferably just one wolf)

3) Proceed to chase the deer close to the wolf, where it will meet it's end.

4) Sneak up on the wolf while it's eating and shoot it dead.

5) Gleefully harvest both animals.

The first few times I did this I thought of it as smart play, but the longer I went on the more it felt entirely too easy and like an exploit. It occurs to me that if the deer ran a bit faster it would take the wolf longer to catch it and make this a lot harder (and more realistic imo) to do.

Or if the deer would actually fight back when cornered by a single wolf, as many deer do.

Yes, deer prefer to run from things, but if cornered, are not afraid to fight. They can also do some nasty damage with those antlers, or even just their feet.

Well that's the proven tactic for getting the most out of a bullet since I play the game. In earlier versions though you couldn't sneak up on a wolf this close as you can now, not sure why the devs changed this.

But depending on how good you "aim" the deer towards the wolf it might be that the wolf will chase it for quite a good time, I've had instances where it'd hunt the deer across the whole sea from coast towards the foot of Jackrabbits.

> I just lure the wolf away with a torch once it catches a deer.

How? The wolf would just charge me and ignore the torch.

I mean by holding the torch in your hand, the wolf will stop in front of you. To do this, you have to:

1. Stand on flat ground

2. Keep the torch between you and the wolf

3. Keep a distance of at least 5 yards from the wolf

4. Never move towards the wolf within 5 yards to provoke it

After the wolf stops in front of you, you can choose to do these immediately:

A. Sprint away as fast as possible. If you are not burdened and not tired, you can always get away from it after spending 70% of your running stamina. Get back to the deer later to harvest it.

B. Evacuate slowly to the nearest shelter. By moving backwards and sticking to all the 4 rules above, you can safely lead the wolf to the nearest shelter. Get inside and take 1 hour nap. The wolf will be gone and the deer is not frozen yet to be harvested.

C. Stand still and brandish the torch to scare the wolf away. You may need several waves to scare it away. If you fail to scare it away after 3 attempts, it's better to light another torch and change to plan B because you would be very tired at this moment.

D. Press 2 to select a weapon and kill the wolf. Won't take you much time to aim within 5 yards and, as long as you are well rested, 1 arrow in the head will surely finish it.

It has to be mentioned that, if you don't act quickly as soon as the wolf stops in front of you, the wolf will still attack you after about 30 seconds even though you still have a torch in hand then. A steady torch won't hold the wolf much longer.

Tip: you can light a torch with another burning torch. To do this, press H to drop the burning torch on the ground, press 1 until a torch is selected, look at the burning torch and left click to check it. Enjoy.

I've found that when pressing "H" to drop your lit torch in front of you has the same effect as having a campfire between you and the wolf: the wolf will stand it's ground and snarl at you, but it won't charge at you unless you move away from the flames and expose yourself.

Works every time...well, almost every time.

I use this tactic since I play in pilgrim. The wolves don't come after you so you can't get a good shot on them otherwise. Same with the deer. I can't get within 50 feet of a deer so I use the wolf to kill the deer, and shoot the wolf if I can, but it's never a 100% chance I'll kill the wolf either. It's more like 30% ... yeah I'm THAT bad of a shot.... 70% the bleed out and despawn (follow the blood trial to dead ends and never see the wolf again) and then there are times where I'm behind the wolf, the muzzle of my gun shoved directly into it's butt, I shoot, and it's like the bullet takes a direct left right out of the gun, not harming the wolf what so ever and it takes off. Those times annoy me the most!

Wow, did not expect to learn something new after 200+ hours. Thank you!
