Portable Stove

It would be really nice to find or forge a portable stove so you can start fire indoor. Now if you are trapped by blizzard in a cabin without a stove for some time, dehydration might kill you, because you can't start a campfire indoor and it's too windy to start a fire outside. And since now food poisoning becomes quite often, a portable stove can be really useful when you need to cook some mushroom. And it can save your life if you need to warm up immediately so you don't freeze to death in a cabin when condition is too low to take a nap.

What do you think?

+1 on a portable stove idea

it could be a craftable item requiring 8 scrap metal, 2 storm lantern and 4 liters of fuel. it might weigh upwards of 6-8 kilos and could be one of the heaviest objects in your inventory.

3 prybars, 1 storm lantern and 8 scarp metal. A toolbox is needed to craft. Weigh 6 kilos. Function the same as other stoves or fireplaces.

Not sure about a ministove - heavy, gas and it would have to be something actually used by the previous inhabitants. But one can make a sort of box out of a sheet of metal and/or some wire, for fire both outdoors and indoors, keeping weight to a minimum. Plus the thermos and perhaps the ember box that were proposed recently (or at least a bottle close to the body: 1liter of lukewarm water is better than none)

+1. I wouldn't say it touches game balance and if anything, it'll add more immersion. I find it hard to believe that houses without a source of fire were lived in, and the existence of a portable stove would enhance the immersion and explain it both - the inhabitants simply took it along when leaving.

Some of the houses in PV that don't have a fireplace or wood stove have a big propane/ oil tank outside, so I can only assume they used that for heat.

On second thought, it shouldn't be craftable, but should only be found via loot. Cannot hold a fire longer than 2 hours, so you can't use this to warm up during whole night's sleep. It could protect fire from wind, but 2 hours' fire is not warm enough in a blizzard.

I agree that it shouldn't be craftable.

Also it should put off a pretty small amount of heat (the whole point is to have it very concentrated on whatever you're cooking/heating/etc). Still, having it as rare found loot would be groovy - an extra use for the jerry cans, and the ability to make some water when taking refuge in a long cabin far away from where you intended to be, while you wait out the blizzard that just refuses to end...

+1 for this idea though I would like to attempt to expand on it possibly.

I'd suggest two types of portable stoves, one as loot only, and one as a crafted stove.

For the loot only stove, I'd suggest something like an old Coleman dual fuel stove ( this IS based in Canada after all and at least where I grew up there were a bunch of them kicking around ). A better idea for this in my opinion though would be something like an Omni - Fuel type stove like the Optimus Polaris ( Sorry if brand name drops are taboo on here but this is my first post  ) That type of stove can run on just about any liquid fuel ( Naphtha, Kerosene, Gasoline, Diesel, Lighter Fluid, AV Fuel, and Jet fuel ) as well as propane and butane. Then that would become a game of what resource is more important to you such as lantern fuel vs accelerant.

For the crafted stove, I'd say just make it cost some scrap metal ( It's very easy to DIY yourself a very functional mini stove out of an old coffee can and an old pork and beans can with nothing but a multi tool IRL, though it is very time consuming to do so and get an acceptable finished stove )

For balance reasons I think they should both be able to do everything a fire can do except cook raw meat. As well as take a bit longer at those tasks ( Melting snow, Boiling water, Brewing drinks, Warming food back up )

The crafted stove should use less fuel per hour of burn time though, and possibly only be fuelable with sticks since you can't exactly fit a log in to a coffee can to burn it properly for cooking.

You can easily craft a small camp stove to boil water or even cook small meals out of a tin can from baked beans. (16oz tin can) You can also make them out of old metal coffee cans. I have used a homemade rocket stove made from an old coffee can and a few large baked bean cans for years.

portable stove? to me is build a fire? or maybe this is so you can take it into other houses/cabins and why bother?

The point, more or less, is to be able to boil water and heat food in places such as trailers or cabins with no place to make fire if you get snowed in by a big storm. Or to save on fuel in the case of crafted a tin can stove, or melt snow / boil water faster etc in the case of the looted stove at the expense of non renewable fuel sources.

I find it absurd that I have to make a huge roaring fire to melt a bit of snow when there are boat loads of empty cans from the food you eat or even just laying around in the houses you loot that you can make a perfectly functional mini stove out of.

It is often necessary to move to a wind sheltered side of a house in order to cook or boil water. The critical factor is often availability of wood however a few minutes scavenging in a wind sheltered location usually suffice. Sometimes it is necessary to sacrifice clothing wear due to exposure to wind.

A portable stove, about the weight of a lantern and running on lantern fuel would be nice but not essential. It would certainly give more flexibility when staying on the islands of Coastal Highway. Otherwise, just choose a place with a stove. Some outposts totally lack any stove such as the fishing cabins and the logging camp. I often cook in a nearby fishing hut.

What I really wish for is a portable wind shelter so that I can safely have fire outdoors and not worry about the weather killing my fire during a critical harvest.
