Dead Asleep On My Feet

Hands down, so far, my greatest irritation is the sleep system.

Several times I have had enough extra clothing to build a mattress and 2 couches yet for what ever insane reason I cannot, in a 47 degree building, lay down and take nap.

This is one of the biggest game flaws Ive found to date. For example, in the hydro dam there are enough cardboard boxes to make a palace out of and with all the extra clothing I have, why in gods name, I cannot lay down and as a result I die on my feet.

Some how the homeless seem to be able to sleep in boxes and stuff their clothing with newspaper but my character cant in a survival situation.

Bad, bad, bad.

Cardboard, clothing, cloth, pine needles O'plenty, an over stuffed chair, deer skins, wolf pelts, bear skins and you cant make a place to take a nap inside a warm building. Wow.

This needs changing in a big way.

The other limitations I get, I don't agree with them all 100% as they are implemented, but the no sleep without a bed or bedroll is insane.

Its not a problem with a bedroll by itself. Its the fact that for some cosmic reason You cannot sleep anywhere but in a bed or a bedroll. That is simply nuts.

Decades ago I slept standing up in a cattle car in basic training. I've slept on the base plate of a mortar as the track bounced down the trail and through the woods. In cars going down the road. On the floor watching TV.

But with 1% health left in survival mode I cant lay down and take a nap? Please.

Its the inability to sleep without a bed or roll that I have issue with. Actually its my biggest issue. I can roll with everything else.

I would even go with a huge rest penalty for NOT being in a bed or bedroll. Say a 75% rest penalty for time slept would be fine. At some point everyone falls asleep no matter what and not just instantly dies on their feet from exhaustion.

All Im sayin'

You're correct. At my most tired I pulled over crawled into the back of my truck and slept on the bed. I feel that one thing to improve the game would be what you said. Just let me lay down in the ground. No warmth bonus, I'd even go with a malus to fatigue reduction so you have to sleep longer to get rested. But please, let me just crash out anywhere.

Shoot, I might freeze to death but I think I should even be allowed to lay down in the snow..

That should be the punishment for letting the meter bottom out. You collapse and pass out wherever you are, for better, or worse. Maybe you freeze to death, or maybe you get eaten.

So you went to the dam and forgot your sleeping bag, right? ;) i can not tell you how often that happened to me. it created most dramatic situations. the thing is: this is a video game. you need things like that to keep you on your toes. i saw so many posts about this and that not being realistic enough, but, come on. then you´d have to argue about why you don´t have to take a sh*t after eating 8 kilos of wolf meat. and then make a forum post about how badly toilet paper has to be added.

honestly, you forgot your sleeping bag in the dam, you´ll die or make it to the camp office. oh, and don´t forget to repair it.

it´s a game. prepare yourself. ;P

Agreed with the OP. The inability to sleep or rest on the ground, floor, or any number of comfortable sofas, benches, and chairs is more than a bit bothersome at times. The bedroll or bed provides a warmth bonus, which is nice, but it shouldn't be required in order to nap or pass the time during a blizzard.

Agreed. The thought process behind it was probably "if you fall asleep when it's this cold you freeze to death anyway" but this isn't necessarily true if you're wearing good clothing and inside or near a fire.

In real life, I have used cut pine/conifer boughs to make a layer of insulation between me and the ground. It was actually absurdly comfortable. Look up "pine bough bed" to see what I mean. Make it thick enough, and you won't even feel the ground. Maybe make it require a knife or hatchet to craft?

Or, you could use cardboard from boxes. I have also done this to get some easy insulation from the cold ground. Take the boxes and "break them down" so they fold flat, then layer them on top of each other. I made my "impromptu mattress" several layers thick, and it was also surprisingly rather comfortable, all things considered. Carrying it with you would be a PITA, however. Maybe a cardboard mattress would be something you build and leave in place, instead of taking it with you like a normal bedroll?

Of course, IRL, I would totally "link" the above with a regular bedroll, to maximize warmth.

That's an absurd argument (it even has a name).

There is no reason to believe that people would ask for toilet paper or toilets after being able to sleep on the floor.

All the reasons for asking for toilets or toilet paper are already there and yet this is the first post I have read mentioning this.

It is completely unrelated to sleeping and there is no reason to expect that changing one will affect the other.

Why do people need to cling to extremely absurd mechanics to make the game "challenging"?

Have we explored all sensible options already?!

^this!

TLD does such a great job at portraying a real survival situation that people forget that it's still just a game and as such it takes a lot of shortcuts to emulate the stress of a survival situation while still being playable. I mean hands down in a real situation you wouldn't do most of the things we do ingame, there are some survival experts in this forum who could fill books with their posts about all the stuff being wrong ingame.

It does alot that is close to reality but as June rightly said, 8KG of meat has to go somewhere but it doesn't (unlike in ARK for example, which I find mildly disturbing ), not to mention that eating 2KG of barely cooked meat every day would give you a serious stroke pretty soon. If you point to thing A not being real you have to fix thing B and C and D and so on too until you end up with a totally different game.

So for balancing reasons and to give you some challenge you can only sleep on a bedroll or in a bed. This makes you think ahead and prepare yourself - that's the survival part of the game that is true to RL - but it does not let you lay down on the floor, which is the shortcut the game takes.

Also don't forget, in TLD it's expected that you die alot and learn from your experience. When I began playing someone told me that you need to die at least 50 times until you've learned from all the major mistakes and this is true, going out without a bedroll or - since a few updates - not regularely checking the condition of the roll is a mistake and the game punishes you for it, period. Either you learn from it and improve or you go on the forums and complain about how unfair or unreal the game is. But I'm deeply convinced that the former will give you a better gaming experience in the end ;)

Just want to chime in and add another vote for being able to sleep anywhere, albeit at some substantial penalties relative to the bedroll. Chairs and couches should work as well.

Craftable beds would be great as well.
