JErosion
Over at The Long Dark Reddit, barron42 posted an idea that I though had merits for discussion here on the Main forums. Improved HarvestingI would love it see harvesting exist as a skill that can be improved to yield more meat, etc., based on skill. Has this been suggested already? What was the popular opinion?Butchering in the field is like a game of how-much-of-this-can-l-leave-here. I think when he says drop, that's what he's saying. In rough terms, getting in close to bone and cutting around ligaments, cartilage, etc. will get you more meat (and quicker) but you need to have advanced knowledge of how to angle the knife and how deep to cut in order to make that happen. It literally can't be done well without insight particularly for harder places like neck and belly.Butchering an animal isn't simple and you can certainly waste meat by incorrectly boning out, skinning and trimming cuts.I think the idea around this is very solid. like everything else you have a base stat for Havesting. at the low end, field dressing deer or other animals will take longer and you wind up with irregular cuts, or even foul the meat by hitting certain internal organs(so some of the meat is at lower condition to what some of your other cuts are). But with enough experience and skill, you can insure clean meat, more meat and do it faster too. Skill increases could be handled by time spent harvesting vs times you harvested, you wouldn't want a player to mid-max this by havesting 16 half a kilogram cuts off of a dear to raise their skill. VanIsleMan
This is such a basic concept I had not even thought of it, you are all absolutely right. Even the hides can easily be ruined, and should include the fact that you need to actually use the brain of the animal to tan it nicely and to keep it supple instead of having to pound or chew it to produce these results as some ancient cultures would do. This could all open an entire new side of the hunting/skinning process. Just dropping them on the floor has always seemed a little(ok, a lot) odd to me.
