Item list/map creation

I think it would be really helpful to be able to keep an ongoing list of all items you have at each location you discover. I can't tell you how many times I've gone to a location because I thought i had an item there, only to discover it wasn't. You could make it so you only update the list if you want to and only when you exit the building. Also maybe you could pick and chose which items to include on your list. I also think it could be cool to have some sort of a map. Not necessarily for navigation but more for just a record of where you have been?? However, I feel like a map might give the game a secondary "objective" though, like the map itself would encourage exploration more than the need to find more resources thus changing the tone of the game, which is something that i don't want. I don't know, I'm just a visual person. Also map/list drawing would also introduce additional items to find and make

I like this idea aaannd I don't like this idea. The gamy side of me likes be able to keep track of everything. After all, I might not play for a few weeks and don't really have a clue what the condition of all my stuff is. Surely the "character" would know. Then the other part of me thinks someone who was living on the brink might not know how many pound of bear meat he had stashed away or their condition without taking a look.

In the end, I simply recommend you write all that down. If it is important, then annotate it. I started keeping a color coded digital "post it" on my desktop. I was not worried about my base camp as I have my thumb on it. But I would put down the general condition of my food at other caches, what was in them and the date last visited. Then I can just look at the post it and draw conclusions. Maybe that meat is to far gone or there was an extra axe there.

If you wanted to cheat about the food condition at a location, like that bear I took down in PV while my base is in ML, I just take a piece of meat from that kill with me and stash it in my main base. I know when the piece of meat I have hits 50% I need to have some sort of operation out of PV if I don't want to waste the meat. When it gets down to 30% I know if I plan on having operations out of PV I better hit it PDQ or take my own food.

Out of curiosity how often do you make use of the in-game log to keep track of your progress or orient yourself?

I don't.

Now, if you would let me add to the diary... then things become interesting. Even more so if you added in a simple "paint" function to make drawings or let me import pictures. Having a simple map where I could X out the locations I have looted, mark them as caches or hazards (like a bear lives in this cave) would be really, really nice. Given time, I could expand my drawing to include more and more areas. It come be something as simple as a line representation or something as complex as the player can envision.

same pretty much looked at the basic in game log and found they are pretty much boring and what I already know I have done? sleep. drink. woke up drank more water etc. who cares really about those apart from you dev guys? but as others suggested if we could some how create our own notes/logs using either books we find or something sim might be more fun!

I have to bump this thread just because it's one of the only things that I wish I had in the game now;

If I could just keep some of my own notes in the log area. That would be fantastic. Often in the game you can't fit everything you find on your person so being able to write down where you leave stuff would make sense for myself and in the context of the world.

I'd probably take to writing down directions as well haha. But yea. Sometimes I can't play the game for a few weeks and I totally forget what I've done when I'm trying to get back into it.

I`m really with you... I think the same as the first time I read the ingame-log.

I`m not interested in what I was eating, drinking or when I go to sleep and wake up...

Only important for me is where I was (or find a new place) and I wish it would be saved, when I killed a wolf or a bear and crafted an item on the workbench.
