BaneofBadgers Posted August 17, 2015 Posted August 17, 2015 I had this idea earlier today when hiking. What if you could find a walking stick/pole in cabins, or fashion one out of a branch? It could make your fatigue go down much slower when walking, but you could not sprint with it. I think it could be a good addition to the game, and help with your fatigue. would weigh about 0.75 kg.
sir ice Posted August 17, 2015 Posted August 17, 2015 finding walking sticks in cabins seems dumb, but i like the idea of a walking stick, also not in the inventory. you should be able to pick up a branch, and walk with it. while walking with it no carrying any items that aren't the branch. once you stark sprinting you drop your branch.
Boston123 Posted August 17, 2015 Posted August 17, 2015 Why is finding a walking stick in a cabin "dumb"? Walking sticks and trekking poles are rather common, and make crossing snow and ice much easier. And, why would you drop the stick as soon as you start sprinting? Can you not hold things in your hand as you run?
BaneofBadgers Posted August 18, 2015 Author Posted August 18, 2015 i agree with boston. you can run with a stick, or at least put it away. and yes, trekking poles are very common.
elloco999 Posted August 18, 2015 Posted August 18, 2015 +1 for a walking stick.Especially if that walking stick has a sharp point on it and can be used to fend of wolves. Did anyone say "spear"?
danicusrex Posted August 18, 2015 Posted August 18, 2015 Hahaha, elloco999 beat me to it.A spear can definitely double as a walking stick.

With all of your posts, I get the idea that you don't spend too much time outdoors. I can sprint with a 7-foot spear shaft, by holding it parallel to the ground / perpendicular to my body. A 3-foot hiking stick would be absolutely no problem.

I know that you can run with a walking stick, but you can't with a branch. Don't consider me a hater or anything guys, i know the author of the topic in person.
danicusrex Posted August 20, 2015 Posted August 20, 2015 A walking stick IS a branch. a straight branch.
bethany Posted August 20, 2015 Posted August 20, 2015 Don't consider me a hater or anything guys, i know the author of the topic in person.Regardless, it's not good practice to flat-out call an idea "dumb", especially if you don't explain your relationship with the OP at the beginning of the interaction. Now let's talk about sticks some more, and move on from this little speedbump =)
EternityTide Posted August 20, 2015 Posted August 20, 2015 Depends on the stick anyway. Not all walking sticks are wooden.Perhaps a "stick hierarchy" should be introduced. For example, a cut branch can be used as a walking stick. It would be quite heavy (approx 1-2 Kg, due to water content). Can be broken down for firewood and used as an offensive weapon (very slow in swinging it however). Takes damage from excessive cold due to expanding ice crystals within.a wooden cane can also be found, lighter than a cut branch, but still quite heavy (approx 0.75 -1 Kg). It can be broken down into firewood and be whittled into a spear. Then you can have an aluminium trekking pole. Does not degrade in cold weather and takes less damage when used in combat. Weighs approx 0.5 kg, and yields 3 scrap metal when harvested (is very rare, so only should be harvested when damaged beyond repair)
