MiniNightmare36 Posted August 13, 2015 Posted August 13, 2015 Tires would have a good use in the type of situation the long dark presents. A lot of items will be added if this suggestion is taken into play. But it will make the game more realistic and that's the main goal.

AmericanSteel Posted August 13, 2015 Posted August 13, 2015 Tires would have a good use in the type of situation the long dark presents.I can't think of any, tell me three uses for a tire in the type of situation TLD presents * Radial armor for wolves * Fire extender (though I would not cook with it)* Cordage* Treads for snow shoes* Traps to live catch rabbits (basically you stack tires up, pile snow around and make a "pit" they can't get out of)
Boston123 Posted August 13, 2015 Posted August 13, 2015 The fact that you cannot come up with ONE use for something just means you won't be very successful in an actual survival situation, Octavian. Survival is ALL about improvising and finding alternate uses for things.Firstly....burn them?Seriously, a "standard" rubber tire would burn for quite some time. Cut it up into chunks, first.Use them as insulation. In fact, cut a tire so it "unfolds" lengthwise, then slash it so it "unfolds" widthwise, and you've got a 3ft by 1ft inch-thick insulative layer. Put some of those underneath you as you sleep outside, and you won't have to worry about the cold ground. Or, nail them to the inside walls of a room, and that room will be much better insulated.Hell, an abandoned car, or a vehicle maintenance shop, would be an AMAZING place to search for materials. Wire, rubber, various fabrics, oils/alcohols, etc. Of course, "game balance" (/snark)
elloco999 Posted August 13, 2015 Posted August 13, 2015 You can put a number of tires around you and roll down a hill for faster travel Burning tires would be a last option for me considering how bad that smoke is for your health. And given the amount of fuel available already I doubt I'd ever need to.As threads for snowshoes would be the most likely use if you ask me.You might be able to create some armor from tires. I could envision at least an arm guard so you can use your arm to keep the wolf from doing some serious damage. Not so sure if the game needs such a thing though...Insulation might work, but to insulate a room you'd need a lot of it. And then I would argue you should also be able to do the same with cloth and animal skins. Those might actually be better anyway.I don't really see harvesting tires adding much to the game.

And given the amount of fuel available already I doubt I'd ever need to.I think the real issue is using it as an extender. I would not put it in a fire pit outside unless I was signaling for rescue. Using it inside a stove would be ok, though I would hate to think about the long term effects to the stove pipe. Putting a few chunks of slow burning, thick rubber on a fire could keep it going to hours while I was away doing... whatever. I then come back and start adding wood again. When I was in Panama, the rioters would pile up tires and light them. Of course, I was in riot gear with a protective mask so the smoke was only a problem for visibility. The real point is even after the crowd dispersed and the tire piles were pulled down, they burned for hours upon hours. I am just glad the ground was flat so I did not have to worry about them rolling flaming tires toward the defensive shield lines.

You would basically be breathing in smoke from a wood-fire anyways. And you could totally shift the fire barrel over to a corner, crack a window, and rig up a "chimney" from cloth, or one of the many pieces of pipe laying around. It would only really be useful for heating, anyways, and let you save your wood supplies for cooking food. Not really. Inch-thick rubber vs cloth and leather? No way. Cut off a strip of rubber and jam it around a windowframe, or just straight-up cover the window with the flattened-out tire. FAR better insulation. And, how many tires are there in the gas station, and on vehicles, compared to cloth?
toebar Posted August 13, 2015 Posted August 13, 2015 I don't see the utility in them really.. heat as a last resort I suppose.. of course there is uses for everything, but there's so much else available.. Not convinced they'd be good for snowshoes...maybe I don't see what is meant though..?As for insulation, I bet you'd be better pillaging and reusing insulation from another building if you really needed to do this (doubtful!).
