Placing vs. Dropping objects

So after finding a comfortable place to hole up I've built a a good amount of firewood and water-bottles and I would love to be able to organize these things better and not just in containers. I see tables, and shelves all over the house but I will never be able to store stuff on them, I can only drop stuff at my feet. I would love to see an additional option instead of just drop but also place. I picture the object placement to work like the bedroll placement (only on flat surfaces). Placing Objects instead of just dropping them would also help keep the pelts and guts I am curing more organized instead of a big pile.

Some of the furniture items (like the counters in the Camp Office in ML) remain non-destructible. Is there a way to make them behave like containers, but with the contents displayed on flat surfaces? Or would it be easier to be able to "place" all items in the inventory?

I'd say the later.

It would be nice to make a system that places an item on a special container and either make that item interactable or just use the standard inventory system, but if placing is already in the game and it can be implemented for other items then it's a much safer and simpler solution. :)

+1 for placing items

The nature of this game very much encourages "nesting", and being able to organize things the way you want them (with shelves being useful, rather than something to get out of the way to have more floor space for another "stack" of something) would go a long way in making nesting feel more rewarding.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, is there any desire for an auto drop key bind similar to the "3" key that would either 1) drop the heaviest items in inventory (to allow sprinting when being chased, or to maintain walking speed as fatigue increases) or 2) drop the lightest items in inventory (for trail marking without stopping every X feet)?

I'm not really in favor of a "drop the heaviest item" button - for something like that I'd prefer a "drop your entire pack" option.

I could however get behind the idea of being able to go into your inventory and select a stack of something as "breadcrumbs". I wouldn't want it to just automatically take the lightest, I'd want it to be a toggle check that you apply to things in your inventory to make it a breadcrumb... then hit the button to drop a breadcrumb.

Being able to place items would have a :

Realism +1

Playability 0

while it is only an esthetic change, it would be nice to decorate your living space a bit. The game even seems to support the mechanic, with the lamp, bedroll, and snare.

Most definitely in favor of placing items to better organize them, easily see what I do/do not have & give my base areas a more natural/real life feel. Would LOVE to see this implemented at some point :)

We can place lanterns, so the routine is already built in. When all those candles we see in the houses become interactive (please) this will be especially handy. Other than that I'm not sure what I would use it for, but I'm sure I'll figure out something - maybe keeping a large number of cups of brewed rose hips on the counter?

I'd go down the list of things that don't degrade, and figuring out which of them I can store on shelves rather than in a container (or yet another pile on the floor). Spare flares, extra rifle ammo, extra snares, etc.
