BDCarrillo Posted August 11, 2015 Posted August 11, 2015 So I lit up a fire outdoors, and was crouched under a rock outcrop. I was panning the UI around for a valid spot to start a fire, and found out you can light one directly at your feet. For laughs I tried it, and burnt off half my clothes.I would suggest that the UI not allow you to START a fire under yourself... Doesn't make any darn sense. I can understand accidentally burning yourself, but who is going to pile up logs and stand on it to light it?
coryduran Posted August 11, 2015 Posted August 11, 2015 Haha this issue has come up once or twice before...Personally I don't want them to change this. If you decide to make a fire under your feet, live with it. This is the theme of the game, make mistakes, get hurt/die for it, don't do that again. As far as "Who is going to pile up logs and stand on it to light it?" it sounds like you did .
BDCarrillo Posted August 11, 2015 Author Posted August 11, 2015 Only as a test to see if it would be a valid placement.I didn't apear to be injured or lose clothing until I left the "fire" UI.
coryduran Posted August 11, 2015 Posted August 11, 2015 Well now you know . I get the complaint, I just like the fact that they haven't changed this yet despite this not being the first time it was brought up. Your certainly not the first one to bring it up though.
Scyzara Posted August 12, 2015 Posted August 12, 2015 TLD doesn't prevent you from killing yourself by doing pretty unwise things (to put it politely^^), that's by design. Neither does the game prevent you from igniting yourself nor from jumping down the Ravine or the wall of Carter Hydro Dam.Plus, it sounds like you survived your episode as human torch - that's already a big concession towards players who accidentally ignite their own boots. In previous game versions kindling a campfire below you usually turned it into your funeral pyre.
Hotzn Posted August 12, 2015 Posted August 12, 2015 *piles up logs, stands on it and lights it*Asks:who is going to pile up logs and stand on it to light it?
BDCarrillo Posted August 12, 2015 Author Posted August 12, 2015 I suppose I was looking at the valid fire placement rules in a different light (ie, "that's a bad idea" voiceover) but I do see that it fits the theme of the game
DrMembrane Posted August 12, 2015 Posted August 12, 2015 Honestly, the target boxes are not nearly clear enough, 2 times now I've placed a fire clearly at least 2 feet in front of my character but yet it said I was burnt from standing in the fire, the game should either disallow this, or clean up it's programming.

I consistently build my fires RIGHT next to me, and never get burnt.
bethany Posted August 13, 2015 Posted August 13, 2015 It's not a common problem we come across, but I've noted your feedback.
KD7BCH Posted August 14, 2015 Posted August 14, 2015 It's not a common problem we come across, but I've noted your feedback. Not a common problem but the impact is huge. You start hundreds of fires thought out the game, it is impossible to not start fires and survive, while it continues to be possible to inadvertently start a fire directly under yourself rather than walk into it. That is poor design and when the game goes to retail would be treated as such. It will particularly piss off players who make it 100 200 300 days only to die in some cheap fashion like that so please take it seriously. Game is supposed to be challenging but challenging not due to interface, and not due to cheapness. Thanks Bethany for noting our feedback on this.
TWM Posted August 14, 2015 Posted August 14, 2015 It's not a common problem we come acrossIt happened to me once, when I went out at night to light a fire to melt some snow and get water. My fatigue was low so I thought: 'Why waste the excess hours? I need water straight away'.So I fumbled around in the dark to find a suitable spot to light a fire and when I did, all of a sudden my health started decreasing. Before I knew what was happening, I had been seriously burned and my clothing singed to pieces.Turned out, I had lit a fire right under me. Ooops.Of course, since then I take better care where I light my fire. But it's still kind of silly.
