ThorsHand11 Posted August 10, 2015 Posted August 10, 2015 -> I would love to see Owls added to the game, or at least hearing them a night. Playing the long dark has reminded me of one of my favorite bed time book my parents read me as a child. "Owl Moon" by Jane Yolen. The feeling of peaceful silence of a winter landscape at night is one of the things that The Long Dark pulls off the best. -> I would also love to be able to hunt the birds that I see flying around. I know crows don't have much meat but still it would be another food source. Hunting birds though would most likely require a shotgun which is not in the game at this moment but I feel would fit well into the world of TLD.-> Two small notes about sound: 1. it would be nice to hear some animal ambiance while indoors like The owls at night or a distant wolf howl and crows in the morning. 2. The rifle needs to be louder. As a hunter I am always disappointed by gun sounds in games, I feel that the rile in TLD could be the first one I like. I'm not taking like actual decibels of a real gun (we don't want to kill anyone's hearing) but have it be loud enough that it surprises new players when they first fire it. Also add some echo to the sound so you can hear it reverberate off the hills. it should be a definite break in the silence of the game.
Bill Tarling Posted August 10, 2015 Posted August 10, 2015 You actually can hear an owl in the game if you're in the right area and the right time...
ThorsHand11 Posted August 10, 2015 Author Posted August 10, 2015 Cool. I love the loon sounds in TLD I have high hope for the owls. I guess I have a new goal now.
EternityTide Posted August 10, 2015 Posted August 10, 2015 You actually can hear an owl in the game if you're in the right area and the right time... you know the more I hear this, the more I think this is like that mysterious Flint everyone keeps mentioning. I've never seen, nor heard of this Owl.
bethany Posted August 10, 2015 Posted August 10, 2015 Have you guys ever looked at the concept work Trudi Castle did for The Long Dark? There's a neat little owl looking semi-annoyed at the bottom of this page:http://ladytruds.tumblr.com/search/long+dark/page/2That's page 2/3, if you're curious to see more of her work. Some of her images are a big part of what really got me so interested in this game.
ItZ x TaCt1CaL2 Posted August 10, 2015 Posted August 10, 2015 I agree with Tanner_Pearson that the rifle should sound louder. In fact, it should attract the attention of wolves, if you are close enough. This would make the rifle a risky endeavor.
EternityTide Posted August 10, 2015 Posted August 10, 2015 Wolves aren't zombies. The sound of a gunshot should scare them off, rather than attract their attention. They aren't pavlov's dogs, you know. The wolves that have heard gunshots likely haven't lived long enough to make the association between the crack of a rifle and humans. Besides, if they DID make this association, they would associate the sound of a gun with "OH FUDGE, LEG IT, NOW!"
Aduron Posted August 10, 2015 Posted August 10, 2015 Cool. I love the loon sounds in TLD I have high hope for the owls. I guess I have a new goal now.Oh my god, the loons are so beautiful! It reminds me of all my time spent in Maine as a child. I was going to make a post about this just this morning, but I forgot about it. The first time I heard it I just stopped and listened to them, until I started freezing. I now do all my cooking when I'm in CH at places where I get to hear them. All the new (bird) sounds are fantastic, I can't +1 this enough, so maybe I'll +1,500
ThorsHand11 Posted August 11, 2015 Author Posted August 11, 2015 I agree Eternity The sound of a gunshot should scare them off, rather than attract their attention.
Majales Posted August 11, 2015 Posted August 11, 2015 The sound of a gunshot is scaring them of, but not everytime.
