Wolf respawn rates

There are many other things can be done to improve this game, but this one is way more crucial than the others.

The wolves now respawn at the same place in no more than 3 days, which makes no sense at all and ruins the game play experience.

For one thing, the player can't really be safe unless the wolf around him/her is killed. Because the player might be attacked by it while foraging wood, collecting rabbits, cooking in a campfire, crafting/harvesting or even eating.

For the other, after the player crafts the bow and enough arrows, he/she can keep himself/herself well fed and avoid all the cold and danger without exploring any further for a very very long time, making hunger in this game completely meaningless.

After all, what's so funny about killing the 'same' wolf at the same place every 3 days? It totally does not add any new experience in any way!

So why don't make the wolves respawn slower? Like 30 days, or never respawn at all? The player will be forced to hunt far and wide, exploring new territory to avoid starvation. And to acquire more food, the player needs to be cunning. In order to get deer meat with the 'aid' of wolf, the player will have to be careful before killing one wolf, using the patience and experience of a real hunter.

And this is not going to make the wolves any less dangerous. Because this way experience won't always work, for hunting in an unfamiliar place is far more perilous than hunting right beside the door.

If the developers really want to give wolves some real sense, other than easy meat and constant harassment, this is the way. It's pointless to add more and more wolves to 'increase' difficulty.

I think the biggest problem is the fixed spawn locations. Spawn locations should be totaly random. It's dumb that wolves only spawn to certain areas.

May I just give you something to think about it? :)

It is true, that wolves has their area, where they ussually patrol. That is their teritory. But,wolves are hunters and they hunt deer and rabbits.Sometimes they have to chase their pray far away,so they may leave their teritory. It all depends. It depends in which direction wolf is walking,it depends from which direction deer/rabbit enters into detection range of wolf, and in which direction deer/rabbit will run.It depends, when(if) deer/rabbit spot wolf and run away.In lateast update devs added much longer lasting of wolf chaseing pray, untill he catches it.Wolf may sometimes cross two regions/areas,running after deer.

So,maybe there are fixed spawning areas, but for sure there is so many variation and I can tell you for sure, that there is no place in game, that is all the time 100% safe,as well there is no place in game, that is all the time 100% dangerous. You can come into area, which is ussually infested with wolves, and you notice there is only one wolf,or none.Or you can without worry pass area, which was many times tested to be wolf free, and suddenly you get jumped by surprise from wolf. :) If you ever ask yourself, how is possible, that you were jumped by wolf in area, which should definately be free wolf one, here is the answer. :) He was just following the pray. :)

So,saying wolve`s actions and paths are completely predictible,is soo wrong. You always must expect unexpected,no matter,if you crossed that area 100 times. It is enough just once to be caught by surprise and in bad time-result may be game over.

Also,if you are long time in certain area, there is no wolves or less of them early in the morning,as well there is wolf free day in that area every 6th day.And it lasts sometimes half a day, sometimes 1/3 of day. :)

I like this

I've learned the wolf spawns and avoid them all the time, it ruins the fear factor.

Yup! And it's too predictable.

I believe they put a wolf or wolves to every location that contains loot. More loot = more wolf. But it's too dumb, I think.

It would be nice if the wolves wouldn't assigned to certain locations but they would wander all around the map. Like the protagonist.

This is the only case when you don't see wolves on their assigned area, imho. And that's all.

In my experience even the wounded, escaping wolves will die in the same area where they patroled before. ;) Don't even need to follow blood trails. Just return to camp, and wait. Then go back and the carcass will be in the same area, where the living wolf was. You won't find the CO wolf's corpse in front of Trappers Homestead! ;) You'll find it around CO.

Wolf in front of CO will always be in that area. They're not going too far before capture any dear. Maybe he's running out of your line of sight but they're not going too far, and stay in that region. And after finish eating he will be back to it's route again. Same with the wolves on the lake's ice. Same with the wolf in front of Trappers Homestead. Same with all the wolves.

There are places where wolves never go. Maybe they go if they see/smell the protagonist there, but not by on it's own decesion.

In my experience every wolf has it's own region. And they will be there or not far if they chase something. And after the chase/eat over, they're going back to their area. That's why you're not going to see CO's wolf in front of the dam! ;) And vice versa.

I've survived in the stalker mode for 33 days and got bored. It's just so boring to hide from, be followed or kill the wolves uppon encounter. After I made 16 arrows, I killed any wolves that dared to come across me, leaving a trail of dead wolves along the way. I did not even collect the pelts or guts. In real life, such unlimited killing will extinct wolves or bears in less than a week. But what else can I do? In a game where you can be caught in 5 consecutive snowstorms in a single day(yeah, that did happen), killing all the wolves along the way is the only way I don't die in a snowstorm in which all my clothing would wear out in a couple of hours. I nearly got killed by freezing in one snowstorm in Allen's Cave, when I had two hatchet in very good condition and many many trees around me in less than 15 yards away which I could not chop down even a single branch because the protagonist insisted using only the dead branches on the ground and prefered to die with lots of food and water. All I did before the snow storm was just hiding from a wolf hoping it would walk away eventually but it did not, so I killed it with my limited ammo and was caught in that snow storm while collecting some 2 guts in unbelievable 40 minutes when it had been completely sunny when I started and found myself in a blizard when I finished. Ever since that, I did not hesitate to kill any wolves on my way to the next shelter.

I never felt I was a stalker under the so called stalker mode, instead I was constantly stalked by silly wolves which know no fear in front of a hunter wearing a wolfskin coat who just killed a dozen of their spieces holding a bow with a charged arrow 2 yards away from them. I had been looking forward to a game experience where the starving protagonist would follow a creature for miles in the cold, which literally implied the stalker. I will probably play under Pilgrim in the future.

This sums up a lot of my gripes actually

I feel that the wolf behavior is to simple. Yes they hunt prey and can be scared away instead of killed. I would like to see more stalking of the player, and more pack-like behavior. When I see a wolf I should not just see a simple choice kill or scare. I want to be scared that I don't know where the rest of the pack is and wither or not that wolf saw me.

Well, let's not bite off more than we can chew with pack-like behavior, that's a massive undertaking.

Stalking however, well, there's the smell mechanic in play, where you're smellable if you're either bleeding or carrying raw meat. I think wind direction also plays a role in this. But it never ever is a thing, at least not the way I play the game. So maybe you should always be smellable and have the wolves investigate the smell, somehow, without this making you a magnet for wolves.

I just feel that seeing wolves if just too mundane. I'm only like 25 days in or so and wolves are not really scary they are just kind of in the way. I think it would be a lot more exciting knowing that if you saw a wolf there is a pack out there that you con't see.

the problem with the respawn time isnt the danger from the wolves, it is the unlimited amount of fresh meet, guts and hides it provides and makes actual hunting meaningless.

If i need food, i take off my clothes, take a knive, go outside to the next wolfspawn, fight him, and come back later to harvest the meet.

What i am missing is that it should be really hard to kill an animal. The best thing to do is

make the wolves have randomspawns, random pathing and a random behavior. So either they act like they do now in stalker or they act like they do in pilgrim.

I really dont care if there are 3 or 6 wolves patroling on mystey lake... for me its just comfort, like a giant living fridge where i can go whenever i want to grab some food

What makes wolves a thread, is when they are unpredictable, hard to find and hard to kill.

Yes, I agree MueckE. Their behaviour is predictable, and the aggression actually works against them once a player is familiar with how to engage them properly. I'd like to see them behave more like opportunistic predators, being super aggressive to injured and tired players, but not engaging when they're just gonna wind up being lunch.

Not really, so long as wolves are respawning faster than you kill them, they will ALWAYS be easy to spot, and ultimately easy meat. It's so easy to provoke them and kill them AS LONG AS they dare to approach you when you are armed. That's why in real life wolves always avoid human as far away as possible and would not attack human being unless cornered. During millions of years of hunting, any wolf dares to attack human will not only get itself killed, but all of it's kind soon because humans are super revengeful.
