Changing what painkillers do

Using painkillers as implemented now instantly heals a broken ankle. I would like to see that changed - painkillers should temporarily enable the player to walk/run at normal speed with a twisted ankle, but healing should take rest and time. When taking painkillers, the red first aid icon in the lower right corner could turn yellow with a time bar showing how much longer the pain killers will last. When the bar runs out, the icon could turn red again, and the player resume limping. So when twisting an ankle, one would have to take painkillers and then make haste to find shelter to rest and heal.

In "reality", you probably didn't break your ankle. If we actually did break our ankle, the game would be over: there would be VERY little chance of surviving that in a TLD-type-situation.

What you most likely did instead is "sprain" it, that is, overtwisting the ligaments in the ankle (of which there is MANY. The ankle is one of the most complex joints in the human body). This is VERY painful, arguably as painful as breaking the ankle, and hinders/prevents movement. It also causes the ankle to swell.

Administering painkillers, in this case, would obviously lessen the pain felt, but also serve to diminish the swelling. Of course, in real life, it wouldn't "heal" the sprained ankle, merely make it more bearable, but in-game it would have to serve.

Honestly a sprained ankle, a dislocated shoulder or even some separated ribs would probably be a death sentence. Not being able to put load bearing weight on a limb would mean just moving would be problematic without support, lets not even think about carrying extra weight or plowing through snow. Getting back to home base, even it was just across Mystery Lake, would be an ordeal all unto itself. When you get home, you would need to craft a splint (lets just say guts and wood). Then you need rest, ice and elevation. Painkillers and anti inflammatory would be a boon. Now you just have to take care of your basic needs while lame. Gathering firewood would be an event. You better have plenty of blankets and a well stocked larder, or you are going to be another stiff layed up inside a home.
