HyperLordBender Posted November 9 Posted November 9 It would be nice to have actual snow in the game. As in the ground is normal ground with snow on top, instead of ground textured like snow. Then we could have snow accumulation and need snowshoes and blizzards would have more of an impact in the game and we could even have noreasters or whatever they are called on the west coast 1
Cyclone35 Posted November 9 Posted November 9 The game was made in Unity, not UE5. It would take a long time to implement realistic snow in the game for every location. Plus it can have a heavy impact on performance, making it less accessible for players with lower end PC's (especially for Nintendo switch). The game has a very distinct art style with all its textures and geometry, it would be difficult to match the art direction if snow was dynamic. Either way, the game is fine as it is, I think realistic snow can be used in a different survival game that has more realistic graphics.

I don't think simulating the snow with particles would be necessary to add varying snow depth. For example, each region could have the snow as an extra layer that would rise and fall depending on how snowed in the region gets. And then you could add shovels for the player to deform that layer to their needs. The problem is that completely changing the topography of ALL maps in the game in such a way would take an insane amount of time. In my opinion, it's something that would fit more with an entirely new survival game.
Veskaida Posted November 10 Posted November 10 (edited) Re-making the game with two layers (a 'top of the snow' which has no collision and walkable terrain beneath it with collision) probably would have needed to be something implemented when TLD was first made or even prototyped. Like @Ghurcb said implementing a change like that now would basically probably require a complete remake of the entire game's (pretty vast, supposedly "larger than Skyrim"s maps), though maybe there are automated ways to implement layering like this with a script but even that would require validating, correcting and playtesting. Might be a cute touch to mimic this effect for the models of animal's feet to sink into the ground slightly, or if the player had modeled legs that their boots would too; but I can see that causing to clipping issues when walking over boulders, ice, roads, floors etc. Edited November 10 by Veskaida

Never understood peoples misunderstanding of this stuff
