thekillergreece Posted November 2 Posted November 2 Out of complete curiosity, TLD's Kickstarter had a few stretch goals. One of them was 'Oculus Rift Support'. Obviously, things changed a lot since then but I wonder if such support is still planned? I can't imagine TLD world in a virtual reality headset with full Quest 3 immersion. Furthermore, this Update blog mentions NPCs and 'Direction Actions' such as lockpicking and all that. I wonder if they are still planned or not, they sounded cool. Again, things and plans change over time but I'm still curious if they've been scrapped or will be considered in the future. 1
Lexilogo Posted November 2 Posted November 2 Not a dev, but from what I could find: This is from ~6 years ago so plans could change, but I found this old comment saying VR support would have to come after everything else (which makes sense), and at that time HL were leaning towards making a standalone VR title over VR integration into the main game. VR is sometimes surprisingly "easy" (insofar that anything in gamedev is "easy") to implement into first person games, but a lot of gameplay elements of TLD seem like they would work against VR integration, (eg. I could easily see a VR player attempting to attack animals with a knife/hatchet) so a standalone project makes more sense. I'm not sure if this idea is still on the table though, I don't think the October Dev Diary mentioned anything for VR. Direct actions are in the game, like safecracking or any time you're using a weapon, it's just referring to the parts of the game that require player skill and not just a numerical skill. It was clearly dialed back from ideas like lockpicking, but they are in the game. NPCs are fufilled by Wintermute (the ones in chapter 3 impressed me a lot), and will sort of be fufilled by the Trader soon too, though the suggestion of something more dynamic for survival was just not gonna happen. For comparison, Project Zomboid has been around for longer than TLD, has an isometric format rather than all the complexity that comes with a first person 3D world, never had ambitions of telling a set story with its NPCs, and it is still working on a fully realized NPC system. Fitting the idea of NPC survivors into a survival game is really dang hard. 3
