Bonsoir Survivors

A little over 3 years ago I made a post about Bears taking a ludicrous amount of shots to kill when they're sleeping. Wouldn't you know, it happened again last week! The bear I was hunting down decided to take a nap right under a climbing spot. I was weary since I remembered what happened last time I shot a sleeping Bear, but for some reason every time I shot it, it just went back to sleep the next second.

So my question is this, how many bullets does it usually take to kill a Bear? I'm trying to understand if them going to sleep either heals them or reduces damage in some way.
Thank you for reading and I appreciate any feedback or help at all! If you do need more information to answer me I'd be more than happy to provide it.

@Varying Neutrals
I feel like this would be a good thing for Hinterland Support to look into.
Have you considered submitting a support ticket?

Also... I think this would be some good science for other folks to help you investigate and report unusual findings to Hinterland as well.

This is only one of the  videos I've seen but I think it varies depending on weapon and difficulty..  plus luck

I actually did, but considering the December update is coming soon I thought the wildlife would get possibly get fixed with it? I don't know I guess it doesn't hurt to since there doesn't seem to be much known about it

I have seen others doing it but in full videos some time ago so nearly impossible for me to find.

I'm sure others have had the same issue before so they might have better answers .

This "return to sleep" behavior sounds like a bug, there is a similar Black Bear bug which causes them to reset their aggro/fleeing state iwhen exiting a cave, resulting in the bear to return to a walk, drop aggro, and potentially even re-enter the cave, allowing a pretty easy to exploit way to hunt bears.

Bear Damage is a bit complicated, and this doesn't necessarily sound like a bug. Bears sleep on their side, so shooting from the underside of a sleeping bear would likely hit it's limbs/shoulders, dealing minimal damage. Obvious questions would be: what weapon, where is the bear being shot, and is it aurora or non?

Based on your answer (and if the shot is a "critical hit" or not), this could mean between 1 ("critical hit" to the head/neck) to 25 (Revolver shot to the limbs).

Also, Wildlife in TLD do not heal, but they can reset by unloading, which can result in them surviving lethal bloodloss; usually this occurs when the player transitions or the animal is sufficiently far away when the weather changes to/from an aurora or a blizzard.

  • Black Bears have 500 health (1,000 for Aurora Bear)
  • Revolver/Distress Pistol do 100 damage
  • Hunting Rifle does 100 damage (110 at Skill 4, 120 at Skill 5)
  • Survival Bow deals 80 damage (88 at Skill 2, 100 at Skill 5)

The "body part" system affects damage based on where it hits an animal, including what weapon was used. For example, a Hunting Rifle shot to a Bear's head deals 300% damage, but a Revolver shot to a Bear's head deals 70% damage.

  • Head/Neck: bonus damage
  • Torso: normal damage
  • Hips, Limbs: reduced damage

Additionally there is a chance for a "critical hits" based on weapon, body part and animal type. e.g. Distress Pistols generally don't deal bonus damage, but have a huge chance to critically hit on headshots, so they frequently one-shot wolves/bears.

It's also worth noting that only 1 Bleeding Wound can be present on an animal at one time.

BladesTLD did an excellent YouTube video on this, if you're interested in learning more about bear mechanics and strategy. Additionally here is a GoogleDoc containing a spreadsheet of bear body part damage values for all weapons.

Thank you very much!

Addressing what you said, this wasn't in a cave, but if I remember correctly it was not to far from one either. Like I said in my initial post though, the bear did that under a climbing robe.

It was not during an Aurora since it was during the day and I doubt it was during a blizzard because the weather was bad but it didn't seem that bad. Maybe it got worse after the 5th or 6th shot, I can't recall very well.

Regarding the damage, I was using a Rifle and was Master (lvl 5). I can't quite recall where every shot landed because I'm still not sure exactly where the shots land on the iron sights. I also shot upwards of 5 shots to take the bear down. What I do recall is that the bear was facing away from me so that's probably why it took so many shots because - if I understand your explanation of damage correctly - it could take 9 shots to kill a bear if you shoot it on the worse spots, even at Master skill level.

Thank you for letting us know about this. We're looking forward to your video! As a reminder, please send that to us here: https://hinterlandgames.zendesk.com/hc/en-us

We'd love to know which difficulty you're playing on, so be sure to include that as well.

I was playing on Stalker difficulty. Sorry for not submitting as a bug, I wasn't sure if it was one or just my lack of experience and/or knowledge.
Thank you for you work! 😊🥰
