In some of the Birch abundant areas —

Spoiler

Ash Canyon, Ravine, Pleasant Valley, Milton Basin —

it would be nice have the ability to collect Birch sap every 360 days or so for a time-limited window. You could then boil the sap down and purify it to make Birch Syrup — a renewable substitute for Maple Syrup.

During this time-limited window, special precipitation — sleet — would fall, coating the trees with ice and stripping the branches of acorns, restocking the snow with new piles to through which to rummage.

This would allow for Acorn Pancakes to become a sustainable staple in longterm Survival games, as opposed to a short term luxury item.

Plus it’d be fun to see an ice storm on Great Bear. 😱

Personally, I think that several kitchen resources should be renewable, such as salt (obtained from salt water), cooking oil (perhaps obtained from animal fat). I hope that with the next part of the DLC, some resources will become renewable in a long term run

I go back and forth on the oil — not whether or not it should be renewable (it absolutely should be!), but the source of it. I’m more likely to go toward seed oil bc it wouldn’t be as readily available as oil derived from animal products, something I’ve truly enjoyed about the DLC.

It might be interesting if we used Cat Tail Heads as a seed source — and extracted the Cat Tail Seeds to produce Cat Tail Cooking Oil … which is something you can actually make!

Goodness knows I have thousands of Cat Tail Heads laying around. It’d be cool if I could use them instead of just tossing them into the Sea. 😂

Whatever the source of renewable Cooking Oil may be, I fully support the idea of renewable cooking ingredients. :) :)

Personally, I like we have (for the most part) limited resources.  I really don't like the idea of plants "regrowing" while everything is still in the grips of a seemly perpetual winter.

However, I would also point out that we do have an option for effectively having renewable resources already... beachcombing.

I also suspect that, the Trader that is forthcoming, will also serve to satisfy that desire some folks may have as well.

hi,

renewable plants in winter is not reasonable for this game. the idea is more to do at its best as we can with what we have. here the context is questionned, although is the concept of this game. so clearly I think this is not the good way.

renewable is only wild life for winter season. moreover the island is huge and we're getting older as time pass.

I think that feats could be lowered with years as we're getting old. better to the job but more fatigue and less hability to carry things.

I've always felt that beachcombing is a mechanic that works as an "easy fix", I understand that it allows for survival ad infintum, but I would still like some resources to be renewable in other ways, balanced by a certain difficulty. I also think that the DLC's cooking resources and recipes are left aside in the long run, it would be fun to use the resources in long runs.

I also support the idea of kitchen salt being renewable, it makes logical sense, since there is salt water everywhere. but what you said is correct, extracting oil from the cat tails would make the resource balanced:toque:

As a quick follow up —

There’s a REASON I said “respawnable Acorns” and not “regrowable plant life.”

After large windstorms and Blizzards, we see renewable fuel sources already knocked to the ground in the form of Sticks, Branches, and Tree Limbs; it follows that not all Acorns would have fallen from the tree during the last Autumn.

Accordingly, there should be a chance for additional Acorns to drop. Not a guarantee, but enough of a cumulative chance to check the area once every couple months or so.

That really doesn’t seem unreasonable, does it.

In my opinion, acorns fall into the same category of cat tails, rosehips, reishi mushrooms, etc. They are plentiful plants that theoretically will run out, but only in very long runs that utilize all of the resources.

I think acorns are well balanced as they are, if you own TFTFT. There are plenty of them in the world so you can use them every now and then without worrying about them running out, but still limited for those who don't manage them well.
