While adventuring in Ash Canyon and retrieving the Ranger Stew recipe I thought it would be in my best interest to cut through the Gold Mine and climb down to the bottom of the mountain and eventually go to Anglers Den for the night. It was cold and I was almost exhausted by the time I exited the mine to the ropes. I did what most do in this case and goated down a level to where I saw a snow shelter thinking I'd be fine as long as I make a fire. I made camp and tucked in for the night here instead.

During the night a random blizzard killed me and I was given the chance to cheat death for the first time. I chose the risky respawn and almost died again due to dehydration and being almost immediately attacked by two wolves...I still don't know how I managed to live through that. I spawned right near Shattered Cove. Keep that in mind as you read on.

Anyway, I looked at my map and saw where the recovery camp was. I made my way back to my main base in Pleasant Valley to heal up and grab some essential travel gear that is lost. I then traveled back to Ash Canyon to get the recovery backpack. Just for the sake of it, I went to where I died, nothing. I went all over the side of the region around and through Pillars Footrest (I think that's what it's called), nothing. The fog wasn't helping either. I kept surveying the area with charcoal and noticed I was getting closer as I went to the area above Shattered Cove but it seemed too far to the right to be anywhere near it so I tried the area near the prepper cache, nothing.

Finally I gave up thinking that it must be glitched and outside of where I'm able to go. I decided to leave Ash Canyon behind and just forget my items, I had more.

As I passed Shattered Cove again I noticed a stream of smoke I'd not seen before, so I made my way to it. It was the recovery backpack! I only lost a bit of food and my bow as far as I can tell

So basically, I looked all over Ash Canyon and the damn backpack was like 500 feet away. Death is a trickster.

Upon closer inspection I lost more than I thought. No joke, I lost my bow, some food, and my flare gun ...but somehow gained a LOT of potatoes. When I died I had 3. I left the recovery camp with 12. Why potatoes??

That's so unfortunate! I though I'd lose that but I didn't thankfully. Even my crampons were there, though a bit lower condition.

Yeah, it does feel rough, but on the other hand... I died. Can't say I'm surprised there are consequences 😅

Might be worth a bug report if you feel something wasn't behaving correctly, either with the loot in your retrieved backpack or it's location. Cheat Death is a fairly new mechanic, so it wouldn't surprise me if there were extant bugs. Far as I understand it isn't meant to include most, or even many of your items when you died. You'll lose most of your items, but the pack allows retrieving 'some' of them. I don't think it is meant to increase the number of items though, so this sounds like it may be an exploit.

But potatoes?? Would have been way cooler to increase literally anything else. I'm happy I retained anything though.
