I had some ideas for the survivor home customization. And I thought I'd share them with you.

{Buildable decor}

What I wanted to add in those are buildable items that you can make in the workbench and make the experience in your base you're own, create function and add uses for them that others don't do, and make your base feel cozy and welcoming. How these work is there's a new tab in the workbench, titled "decor" and once built it, it can be activated in the inventory, much like a cooking pot or bedroll. This can then be placed on the wall or floor and rotated around to fit the placement, And these can be placed inside or outside. However there are some things that can only be placed on the wall and only things that can be placed on the floor.

New resources:

Nails- can be found in industrial places and homes and can be made 10 at a time at a forge using scrap metal.

Scrap glass- can be found under broken windows and made by scrapping things like flashlights and cupboards. Is needed for repairing flashlights.

Clothes rack.

Requires: 7 reclaimed wood, 12 nails and 5 scrap metal.

Tool: heavy hammer and tools/quality tools

Crafting time: 5 hours.

What the clothing rack does is that it not only acts as storage for your clothing items, it acts as a way to display some of your items. How the rack works is like this,you have an upper, a lower, and a middle section to the rack. The upper rack is for hats and can hold 10, however unlike say a storage container it Dosent depend on weight of items, it only depends on what slot they take up, so you can store very heavy items and not have to worry about them taking up a lot of room in your container for example. And what's also interesting is that the first 5 hats that show up on the row are what show up physically on the rack. So for example the first row has a baseball cap and a scarf then a hat and a scarf show up on the hat rack. Underneath of that is a shelf for placing your peaches, your empty rifle cartages, whatever you'd like. And underneath that is the second rack where your coats are, same situation,can only put 10 in at a time and much like the hat rack the first 5 show up in person.

Firewood storage:

Requires: 5 reclaimed wood + 6 nails

Tool: heavy hammer and tools/ quality tools

Crafting time: 2 hours

This is a similar idea, it's a U shaped firewood storage container that can contain all types of firewood such as cedar, firewood, and reclaimed wood, able to contain 15kg of firewood and the firewood put in shows up in person and changes both depending on what firewood is inside and how much is inside. Something also nice is that on either side is 2 u shaped clamps that can store 4 axes or improvised axes by using the pick up and place mechanic.

Gun rack:

Requires: 3 reclaimed wood, 4 nails.

Tool: heavy hammer

Crafting time: 1 hour.

If you've ever been to the trapper homestead home you'll probably have noticed the rack on the wall that sometimes contains your rifle. Well not alot of people know that you can use the pick up and place mechanic to put a rifle on the rack. And I saw that and thought that would make an amazing decoration for the new update and I had an improved design on it that you can craft yourself! Essentially imagine the gun rack from the base game but it's got an extra rack for a third rifle, and it's contained in a square box, and on the bottom is 2 hooks on each side for holding revolver and it can only hold one on each side. And under the bottom rifle is a shelf for placing things like maybe ammo boxes or a gun cleaning kit or really whatever you'd like! Use your creativity to build what you'd like!

Large bin

Requires: 10 reclaimed wood, 6 nails, and 3 scrap metal

Tools: tools/quality tools.

Time: 3 hours

You know those firewood bins you can find around the map sometimes? Well now you can make them and place them outside your base! They're one if the few buildables you have to exclusively place outside, but it also has a capacity of 35kg. Really not much to say, it's just an extra piece to hold things

Food container

Requires: 12 scrap metal, 10 reclaimed wood, and 15 nails.

Tool: quality tools/tools + hammer.

Time: 5 hours

A complex build with a great use. Essentially a vegetable drawer you find around the game, this container can hold 10 klg in each tray however it can only hold food items. And when placed outside it can slow down things like meat and potatoes and carrots from spoiling as quick without needing to place them in the snow outside.

So these next one I think are mostly just for fun decorations rather than having a use.

Polaroid string.

Requires: 10 fishing line, 4 scrap plastic, 8 rifle casings.

Tools: none

Time: 30 minutes

You ever wanted to display all the lovley little Polaroids you've collected? Well now you can with this lovley string of clips that'll hold up your Polaroids, place them by putting them up on the plastic clips. In any order you'd like!

Cabinet shelf

Requires: 4 scrap glass, 6 reclaimed wood, and 6 nails

Tool: tools/quality tools + hammer

Time: 1.5 hours

A simple wall shelf with 2 clear glass doors that you can open and close to access the contents. Want to make a cooking shelf for holding peaches and creamed corn? Maybe a medicine cabinet for your antibiotics and bandages? Or a tool storage for tools and materials. Your imagination and creativity is left to be as wild as you'd like!

Cooking rack

Requires: 2 reclaimed wood and 4 nails

Time: 45 minutes.

Tool: tools/quality tools + heavy hammer.

A small hook rack to hold cooking pots and skillet. can hold 3 cooking pots or skillets. not much more to say but it's nice cause the cooking pots and skillets take alot of room and it's nice to display them next to the stove or door.

Lantern hook

Requires: 2 scrap metal

Tool: tools/quality tools.

Time: 25 minutes.

A hook that can hold a lantern onto a wall, quick easy to make so you can illuminate the room around without having to place the lantern on the floor or on a table.

Bear skin rug

Requires: bear pelt, 12 leather

Tool: sewing kit and knife

Time: 4 hours

A very beautiful bear skin rug including the head for you to place down onto the floor.

Antler rack

Requires: moose/stag antlers, reclaimed wood, 4 nails.

Tools: heavy hammer.

Time: 2 hours.

A way for you to display your trophy deer kills by placing a wooden plate that has your antlers from moose or stags.

Other ideas include stools and simple chairs, a small table, a less small table like a dining table, simple shelves, I just didn't these were important enough to warrant a place a category.

{Trinkets}

Trinkets are small fun little collectable items you can find around great bear island to add a little bit of a fun time while you pass the time with surviving. How these work is around the gbi area there are small items that correlate to either the area its found in or are references to other media, they are able to be picked up and placed in your inventory as an item and have thier own slot. But they weigh nothing and don't degrade and as a fun way to tie into safehouse customization, they can be dropped and placed on tables, shelves what have you and can be used as decor to show what you have acquired in your journey.

So far there are 2 trinkets for each area in the long dark, from mystery lake to blackrock, to ash canyon and forlorn muskeg, to even zone of contamination and forsaken Air field. Some of the ideas for the trinkets I came up with are fallow.

A pilot's badge in the plane wreckage on Timberwolf mountain

A book in a costal highway house titled "ninjas of the leaf" a reference to Naruto

A whaling harpoon tip in desolation point's whaling plant

A pickaxe head in zone of contamination mine

A crowbar in the mystery lake dam titled "black and mesa" with the description "...the best tool at the right time can make all the difference..." A reference to half life {this could also be a variant of prybar}

A pair of aviator goggles in the hanger of forsaken Air field.

And many other ideas can sprout from this. This gives a sense of curiosity and backstory to the areas as well as being a nice fun nod to other games and media and even ones that nod to some of its inspiration.

{Other things}

Finally I'd like to say Some of my last wishes for the safehouse customization coming up cause I really wanna see this be alot of fun.

- like most people id like to move furniture around by picking up and placing things like beds, tables, boxes, microwaves, desks ect. Just to make places feel like our own. And ofcourse some things like cabinets, stoves, electrical panels are too heavy to be moved, and you can't say take a chair from the trapper's homestead to the ranger outlook.

-id like to also be able to clean up the floor and maybe get some scrap glass or tinder plugs

-I. WANT. TO. SIT. DOWN. I would love the ability to sit down on a chair, on the edge of the bed, on the floor and I had an idea on how to implement it for a legitimate reason. When sitting you can slowly regain a little bit of fatigue when doing it, not as much as a good night's sleep or a quick nap but it would work as a buffer for if your stuck in an area where you might've forgotten your bedroll or your in an area like hushed river valley or ash canyon that has almost no structures, and your low on fatigue. This could also be good for waiting on items to cook or just gain a little bit of fatigue while waiting. The catch being that the fatigue benefit only happens for an hour,after that you won't gain or lose fatigue.

-id like to when dropping and placing items, to stack things onto of each other like cans or pots or books to make things look tidy and neat, as well as making things placed just a little bit closer, it always felt like whenever I was making decor I was just a tiny bit too far from one object.

-the ability to not only make things spin 180 degrees around but to also make some items be able to lay in thier side or you can make it so they can lean up against a wall or a table. {Or against the buildables I came up with}

-improved interiors so that way some places have different containers, newer set pieces, different loot ect. making familiar places look new and exciting to explore. Maybe add some new shelves to the quonset hutt or little things like a broken car lift to add that warehouse feel, adding couches and recliners to chairs for that family house feel.

-snow men. Nothing too exciting just the ability to make a snowman. Lil buddy to keep you company. You can put a hat and scarf on him! Call him frosty.

-When placing things like tools and gun cleaning kits, having the ability to open up the kits to give a difference appearance.

I have other great ideas for tld {companion mode, new food and recipes, a solitaire first person game to pass time immersively, wildlife like porcupines and wolverines, ect} I but these were what I came up with for the safehouse customization. Just fun/functional decor to make your place your own. I hope you like my ideas and I'd love to hear what you came up with or if you have thoughts on these.

honestly.... I am a simple man, the ability to put things down closer together, on hang on a wall would make my day,

as for buildables..just creating items already "in game".. the rifle rack, book shelf and or crates for storage would do me...

I just want to be able to lean my rifle on a wall 😭😭🙏 pleeease hinterland

I really think something akin to the Place Anywhere mod should be basegame. The only parts of that mod that I think feels wrong for vanilla is the massive placing range and mayybe the ability to place things on walls directly. Everything else really feels amazing for base decoration and displaying the product of my work looting.

It's natural for devs to worry about clipping, but we can already create clipping abominations by dropping items on the floor, and I think it's fair to ask players to regulate their own activity to avoid it, rather than be excessively harsh in making sure clipping doesn't happen.

As for the rest of the post, I really like it! I'd like base decorations to have very minor practical uses like storage, and having collectable cosmetic trophies would be great. I also like the idea of gating most of this behind the Heavy Hammer, as it stops buildable storage from conflicting with rock caches too much and the hammer's weight helps enforce the fact these are sedentary, long term projects. If base customisation looked something like this, it'd be a great update

Thank you so much! I'm so glad you liked my ideas! I'm hoping hinterland takes some inspiration from this and maybe implements some of my ideas in the next update.

I'd like a few of those too... Gun rack ,even  somewhere for the bows would be great.. and a few bear rugs scattered around.

Snowmen and snowballs would be super fun...😁
