I've noticed with the latest update (2024), when you empty a Jerry can it no longer despawns. This is an absolute game changer in my opinion. However, now that this is the case, I think it would be a bit of a wasted opportunity not to implement a mechanic for syphoning gas from vehicles. You can open the gas cap anyway so maybe just add a plastic tube you can harvest from certain environmental things or found in more industrial areas and garages. Just a thought.

I have checked out the jerry can not despawning and found (for me) that was not true.  It despawns as expected but not desired.  

That said, being able to consolidate or dole out lamp oil would be nice but I consider unlikely at this stage of the game.  Maybe if TLD continues with another DLC.  The fact that all new lantern fuel bottles have 100% condition and are not randomized seems to point to future development in that direction.

I think the jerry cans not despawning thing is related to a bug, not a feature, empty/near empty containers just appear to be behaving strangely this patch.

Harvesting lamp oil from vehicles to build up a solid stockpile would be really cool and I'm in favor of it, but it would need to come with more uses for oil, to justify adding so much more of it into the world. Right now it's actually a very niche resource.

It might be a bug then, but I'll honestly take it lol. I have 2 cans right now at 0.00. No way I got so lucky to empty both to that close to depletion like that. Time to go fishing!
