Well I died and got the option for the first time. I didn't know how I was going to respond if it ever happened. There has been lots of discussion about it for and against. I mostly resigned to the perma-death model of TLD although I got really hot about falling off a log because cat jumped on my lap. I punished the cat with a vet visit later.

This time was different. My custom game was set for very cold so I was used to condition loss every time outside. I got used to dealing with it and was in a very long run after making bases in every region while waiting for the 3rd tales to drop. When it did I decided to start tales #1 again and do all 3. I did the last bunker in FA and should have just head back out to Transfer pass but I forgot if I had looted the cabin way hell around the airfield at the end of the road. The one with the hidden container and the revolver. Got there without dying and healed up, ate some fish and planned to get out back to Transfer Pass.

At noon with full condition I head out back down the road to the Transfer Pass exit. Fully fed, quenched, warming tea, and lit lantern. My heat meter is 3 bar down as usual and I watch my condition drop but this is usual. FA is a bit cold. It's a long walk. Really long. I had forgotten how long and windy. I approach the junction to the airport and look at my condition meter. 50%. That's ok I think. Not so far to go and the day warms up in the afternoon. I keep going. I want to get out of FA. I can warm up in the transition cave on the way out. I pass the mechanic's trailer or whatever it's called at 40% or something thinking i am almost out of FA. Stupid Stupid Stupid!

I forgot how much longer it was to go to get out. At 20% condition I am past the point of no return. Can't go back to the trailer, got no wood for fire and wind too strong anyway and it won't recover condition. I press on desperately  looking for a path leading to a cave but I think I am past the last one. The vision fades and the death staggers start. I place my bedroll down hoping that the +3 deg will be enough. But it is not.

"You faded into the long dark"

Cheat Death? Yes? No?

Sigh. No. It was my own stupidity. I knew how to manage the cold and condition loss. I knew where the warm up places were and I had enough food and water. My impatience killed me. Also probably sipping vodka all evening while playing is not too smart.

I punished myself with a NO and will send myself to the vet.

Unlucky. Vodka seems very much to blame. Vet appointment for the Vodka.

Its striking how differently you and I appear to approach the cold - you saying you had no wood. I too like to trade condition for distance but always lick up sticks to the point that I often end up carting 60+ of them about. Overkill i think. That is, until you really need them.

I should have just stopped overnight at the mechanics trailer and got some condition back then head out in the morning. i don't usually carry wood as I travel because I know all the maps so well and where the caves and huts are. But I forgot how big FA is and how cold. I was used to being 50% condition and not worrying too much about it but this time I seriously misjudged. Vodka definitely to blame. After paying the vet her exorbitant fee I started a new game with same punishing cold settings. This time I pick up sticks as I go. My  summit to TWM needed a constant fire in every cave and even after I got good clothes and repaired them I still needed a cave fire.

I am in PV now and I have to plan every looting or exploring trip carefully so I can get to my intended spot with less than 50% loss. I love it! No animals to deal with. Just the cold. And scurvy.
