SubDola Posted August 17 Posted August 17 (edited) Once mapped all main points of interest in a region, the whole map is revealed. No black spots? Edited August 17 by SubDola Better word. 2
ThePancakeLady Posted August 17 Posted August 17 (edited) Not always. There are some regions where points of interest are far between, and you need to map the "empty" areas between them. There are some locations that can be tricky to map- you may need to get up above the location to reveal it, or be right at the door to reveal it. Using the Polaroid Vista locations to map (after finding and reading the Polaroid) will reveal a larger area on the map than regular charcoal mapping does, so they can help clear some difficult to reach areas. But like I said- there are some regions and locations that you'll need to be very creative and possibly do some mountain goating to map and clear all black spots. It is already possible to fully map at least the regions in Lower Great Bear, but you have to work at it sometimes. Edited August 17 by ThePancakeLady Added one more sentence. No Typonese this time (I think?). 1
SubDola Posted August 17 Author Posted August 17 I do like a clear map but probably a little lazy to try clear every black spot. Just can be a little annoying. 1

Welcome to the forums @SubDola, your idea has been discussed here many times since the introduction of mapping, but you have me thinking about the current state of the in-game mapping. I have not personally completed the cartographer achievement, but I have worked on some regions and found the same issues with blacked-out gaps in my otherwise completed maps. Take advantage of clear weather and elevation to get the most area each time you use charcoal. Also, I like to use spay-paint to mark important locations during low visibility conditions. More to the point of the original post, I don't think it would feel good to work at mapping a large percentage of a region and then having the game "complete" the map for me as a result of a new game mechanic. Maybe it would be a wish list idea for the game to partially fill the black gaps in the map with a greyed-out filler map to make the logical connections of roads and rivers and adding a label of "???" where a new location is needing to be properly mapped by the player. I am a bit surprised the "Steam Workshop Community" has not done more in this regard, but also, I do not use mods. Anyway, this is a great idea, we just want to be careful not to eliminate the need for the player to complete most mapping. Good luck and have fun my friend. Edited August 17 by s7mar7in
