Glflegolas Posted August 10 Posted August 10 (edited) Had an odd encounter with an Aurora Bear today in the Hushed River Valley. It's as if the bear inflicted the Condition damage and the struggle, but died before being able to do any sort of clothing damage whatsoever. My explanation, game tick-by-tick: Astrid fires off the flare. The bear reaches Astrid and starts the struggle. The condition damage is inflicted immediately, as is the blood loss. The flare shell hits the bear while the struggle is taking place, killing it. Clothing damage must be determined at the end of the struggle. Because the bear is dead at this point, no clothing damage occurs. Here is the video [PUBLIC LINK]: Slow-motion video: Edited August 11 by Glflegolas fixed video link so it is public 3

I don't think I could have pulled this feat off if I tried. What happened was clearly a bug, as can be seen by Astrid clipping through the ground. If you would like to reproduce this, by all means, go ahead I actually am a scientist in real life. PhD candidate in chemistry. 3

I_eat_only_wolf_meat Posted August 11 Posted August 11 I've seen something similar with the hammer and wolf struggles. Since the hammer can be an insta-kill, sometimes I go through all the sounds of being in a struggle, but with the wolf already lying dead in front of me.

However, in cases like that, the wolf inflicts minimal damage. Based on the video footage, it looks like the flare round exited the gun 1 frame before the stuggle began. That means I likely took the shot 1 frame before that. Given that I was recording at 30 FPS, it means the shot was taken at most 67 milliseconds before the start of the struggle. The bear has fallen to the ground, dead, 3 frames later (~100 milliseconds). There's a short blackout, and the game seems to get confused -- Astrid re-awakens for another 3 frames, before blacking out a second time. From then on, things return to normal. My guess is that Hinterland never imagined that someone would shoot a bear with a flaregun a few tens of milliseconds before the start of a struggle, and then get a lethal shot during the struggle. Therefore, it's not something the game can handle well (TBH, I'm slightly surprised it didn't crash). 2
Stone Posted August 27 Posted August 27 Cool! Thanks for sharing that video. Quite the story. Thank goodness you pulled the trigger when you did. Thank goodness the bear didn't die on top of you!
acada Posted August 30 Posted August 30 Lucky me I experienced it with wolfes only. But it seems like the fight trigger is distance related. If the charging bear is certain distance from the player, the attack will happen no matter what. But it seems like the distance is not 0 when the fight subroutine is executed, so player still have time to pull the trigger (mouse button), which will execute shooting subroutine. It seems like the shooting one was finished after bear biten the player but before it started tearing clothes (joke of course). And the rest of the animation was just you beating dead bear.
