UTC-10 Posted August 4 Posted August 4 We have seen on TV and movies about campers or fishermen impaling a fish on a spit to cook over a fire. I wonder if it would something that could be added to the game. From brainstorming this. Positively, it might allow for more than two fish, maybe up to four fish, to be cooked around a campfire on four separate spits or two spits and two fish on each. There might be a weight limitation per spit e.g. no two 5 kg salmon on one spit maybe not even one 5 kg salmon but a 3 kg whitefish, maybe. Have to be practical since there is no mechanic that specifically allows cutting meat or fish into smaller chunks except as a side effect of the harvesting mechanic. Optionally, using spits might be separate from a campfire (and only a campfirefire) two cooking surfaces which would allow for cooking fish to eat and making water, for example. Optionally, it could allow for smoking/dried fish, cooked of course, with a shift of decay from the 100 day line for natural food, to the 1,000 day general decay line. Whether it has any other collateral effects (i.e. scent) is up to dev decision. [Food preservation hint] Negatively, it would eliminate any harvesting of lamp oil from the fish. Negatively, it would have a [much] shorter time for the cooked fish to burn to ruin. Negatively, it would be a major change in the cooking on a campfire mechanic. OTOH it could bring back the old campfire with one spit to cook a fish above it. Don't expect this to get implemented. A lot of backroom work involved, but if TLD does continue if might help [with immersion] and have use to players. 😁 3 2
Lexilogo Posted August 8 Posted August 8 A cooking spit makes the most sense to me as a rare loot item that serves as an "upgrade" to a Campfire that essentially adds +2 cooking slots to it, and it would be very cool, I approve of this. It'd increase player flexibility in base locations and be an extra option to weigh up when making plans. Maybe give it a guarenteed spawn in Blackrock or Keeper's Pass or something, to encourage players to travel to those often ignored locations. Pots/cans and even the Skillet could hang off it via a wire, so that'd let you cook pretty much any recipe that already exists in the game on it, so yeah I think it'd be compatible with most stuff as long as the assets for hanging items & impaled meat. Taking a quick look at the recipes, I actually don't think any of them would pose an issue with designing to work off this format with a cooking spit, aside from maybe the canned food. (which could just use whatever wire tie the recycled cans would use) I don't think it needs any more advanced mechanics/caveats than that. (note: I would also like the option to hang it over fireplaces, too!) I am a big believer that this game should have food preservation mechanics instead of what Cooking Level 5 does, but it sadly doesn't seem in the cards. My only slight doubt is that this would make some unorthodox base locations more powerful, which might make some already strong spots like Ravine basing even better locations. I don't think it's a big deal though, the Fuel economy is already quite lenient.
