Wish Posted August 4 Posted August 4 (edited) Hello! Have the shorelines where the weak ice begins changed in each region? I am asking because I've noticed a change in Coastal Highway. A few years back, to make beachcombing easier, I laid a trail of stones all along the border of the solid and weak ice on each shoreline in each region. This took quite a while! I have travelled along the inside of this stone route across the map numerous times over the years. Now I'm cruising along the coast in Coastal Highway and the weak ice has extended inwards. Do you have any info on the extent of the changes? Is it limited to this region, or do I have to reconstruct this line of stones across every shoreline? Thanks! Edited August 4 by Wish 3
UTC-10 Posted August 4 Posted August 4 I have seen changes on the boundaries of the weak ice. It has not been too extensive but one does have to check before venturing out on what used to be strong ice. I had made a point of marking where items washed up and where weak ice was and will always be cautious and not assume that what was remained what was. I have noticed a few beachcombing spots where there was (for me in Pilgrim) essentially no chance to be able to search anything, as opposed to dash and grab, without taking a dip. Some kind of nice things that would otherwise be worth searching but not with the risks involved. I tried once and that was enough (I do prepare so it was just an inconvenience but I didn't get whatever was in the locker). So if a locker, suitcase, trunk, or that "fishing boat" with compartments, has weak ice around it I give it a pass. 1
ThePancakeLady Posted August 4 Posted August 4 I don't beachcomb too often, and I avoid the trunks or lockers or boats and rarely attempt corpses that need searching, and carcasses that need harvesting unless I have crampons on and get that extra second. I am honestly not sure if the weak ice has been moved, or if the game just gives you slightly more advance warning that you are getting close to weak ice instead of waiting to warn you until you are actually on it. I play mostly vanilla Stalker, and there is enough loot that I rarely need to beachcomb, even in late game in a long run. Perhaps Interloper players have more need to beachcomb, even before late game, and might have more experience with whether edges have been moved or not? 1
UTC-10 Posted August 4 Posted August 4 The boundary and location of weak ice has definitely shifted. Not every place but I do know that some spots where I could have searched a trunk or broke up the oar and get the reclaimed wood was no longer viable for anything other than dash and grab or if I could inch up to the boundary and the reach of the cursor could just contact the item, like arrows or hatchet etc. I keep my marked boundary pretty well back, just in case I walk on the wrong side of the boundary, and have spent a lot of time marking where things would wash up (I still get surprised even now). It is what it is, nowadays.
The Feng Hunter Posted September 1 Posted September 1 Confirming my suspicion Hinterland had given the ice floes a graphical pass, too. Interesting. Expect this in the future updates! 1
Master_Arne Posted September 16 Posted September 16 I have not seen the ice edge change, but I have seen the beachcombing places change, especially in CH. 1
The Feng Hunter Posted September 27 Posted September 27 (edited) I avoid Coastal Highway like the plague, so most of my own observations have been made in Bleak Inlet. Finally bit the bullet to collect dry goods in Coastal Highway yesterday. Graphical pass looks VERY apparent here. Weak Ice mechanic seems more forgiving than it had been before, quite honestly. Good to see the Beachcombing fishing boat Weak Ice bug has been addressed, too … the fishing boats were a HUGE improvement to the game for me, so when they were bugged, that became a sad day rather quickly. Thanks for fixing it, Team! Glad to be out of that space now. Loaded up the Travois with some Rockfish and Salmon … headed back to Sundered Pass. Curious how the mangy beasts along the way will treat me. 😂 Edited September 27 by The Feng Hunter
Kranium Posted September 28 Posted September 28 I imagine the changing boundaries are update-related, but IMO they shouldn't be static because such things change IRL. And it wouldn't be unbalanced or anything. 1

And it wouldn't be unbalanced or anything. I love this idea so much. Colder days with fewer Blizzards = more expansive ice floes and thicker ice. A stronger, longer lasting Blizzard comes through and deposits vast amounts of resources along the ice floes whilst also reducing how far out to sea they stretch could be an interesting mechanics switch. MAYBE you could even access additional islands with a more expansive ice floe, you know? Like those tiny ones JUST out of reach in Desolation Point and Bleak Inlet. Maybe there’s a beautiful and expansive Cabin on one of them, and it’s rich in firewood with a sheltered Cove for ice fishing … but the caveat is you don’t know when you venture over to it the next time you could return to Great Bear might be. Kind of like that Coastal Highway Mine, dependant upon the Aurora … except this would be dependant upon a lack of storms. How cool would that be??? 😳
Pyroxene Posted October 22 Posted October 22 No, I haven't noticed any changes. In Forlorn Muskeg and CH.

Not sure when you started playing TLD, but there was a free update to Beachcombing in Part 2 of "Tales From the Far Territory" DLC (available to all players, even if you do not own the DLC) on March 30th, 2023 on PC which reworked the system extensively. This patch updated the Beachcombing user interface, graphics and mechanics as well as significant changes to beachcombing areas and it's loot tables. It sounds like you are "marking" Weak Ice to make it easier/safer to follow it's boundary: I've seen other players use stones, cattail heads, or even placing campfires to designate this boundary, as well as making 'blizzard lines' for navigating fog/blizzards in certain areas. If you want complete information on the current Beachcombing system, I'd recommend this wiki article on Beachcombing. Here is a quick rundown of how TLD's Beachcombing works: Beachcombing yields otherwise non-renewable resources/items. Loot is affected by Game Mode. Beachcombing can be performed in any coastal region (Desolation Point, Crumbling Highway, Coastal Highway and Bleak Inlet) Items deposited by Beachcombing will be on or near Weak Ice near the edge of the map, making collection dangerous since standing on Weak Ice for too long (5 seconds) causes the player to fall in: making them Freezing, wetting clothes and dealing Condition damage). There are 2 types of Beachcombing: post-blizzard and non-blizzard. Both have different loot tables and post-blizzard generally can yield more and higher quality loot, and more unique POI like crashed Fishing Boats. POI can spawn instead of an item: e.g. a deer carcass, frozen corpse, locker, trunk, canoe, or fishing boat. I'd recommend not being over-encumbered, below 50% Fatigue, or walk into the wind when trying to retrieve items so you move as quickly as possible. Equipped Crampons (+1 second) or Improvised Crampons (+0.5 seconds) give more time to navigate Weak Ice before it breaks. Edited October 28 by Veskaida
