Okay, hear me out. I really like when mechanics encourage the player to explore and move about. So.

Maybe we should start with a single cheat death point, and the other two could be acquired in the world somewhere?

Perhaps the player has two randomized locations that reinvigorate their will to carry on or something. Something like the grave sites in As the Dead Sleep.

They could be claimed any time or left until needed. Or maybe they unlock with each death.
