Game freezes every 4-5 seconds in Ubuntu.

When I play TLD on Ubuntu (via Steam) the game freezes for about half a second every 4-5 seconds. After that, I will get the freezing in some of my other games as well. For example, after a reboot I can play Stardew Valley and there's no freezing. Then I play TLD and I get the freezes. If I exit TLD and start up Stardew Valley again, it will now get the intermittent freezes as well until I reboot. It's as if TLD has left some kind of daemon running in the background, but I don't see anything unusual in the process list.

I don't get the problem when running the game on Windows on the same system.
