I love this game and I have a great time playing it. One of the things I loved about it was you only had one life. Every encounter with a wolf was terrifying. Every time you're caught out in a blizzard with low health it was hair raising. I don't get that same sense of thrill anymore. I still have a lot of fun, but knowing I have an out takes a lot of the edge away. I would like an option to turn cheat death off in much the same way scurvy is optional now. You get the option yes or no and then it's set for that run with no turning back.

This is already planned, Hinterland have stated the only reason why it's mandatory at the moment is because they want more people to test it and give feedback. The next part of Tales From The Far Territory will make it a start of game toggle, like Scurvy.

I'm always a strong supporter of giving people more options and I do admire HL adherence to that same ideology.  ( Custom difficulty is still unparalled, I don't recall any other game with anywhere near deeply customizable experience like TLD ).

I do think it's something that if you had a way of polling the majority of the player base ( not just the forum weirdos like us ) cheat death would be an universally approved mechanic. It is a good decision overall.

With that said, we lost a bit of the original TLD essence with it. That makes me a bit sad.

To be fair... "Cheat Death" is already optional by its very nature.
As in, it's literally something that we can choose whether or not to do.

Agreed with others - it is already optional. But I think I understand what you really mean, and I kind of agree that it might have been better to set it during game start. Some people might have hard time to click no if they die accidentaly, to avoid losing their progress.

At the same time, this makes dying to weird bugs "recoverable" so as a function, I think its great.

Just gotta have willpower to click no if you dont want to cheat death :)

Although I do love cheat death, I would still vote for it to be optional at the start of a run. I personally may keep it on most of the time but would like to have the option for certain runs.

And your point is very valid. Although it *is* optional, you lose a sense of danger and thrill when you know that you can cheat death. It's not a thing of willpower or self control but rather psychology, for lack of better words. If your brain knows that you technically have 3 extra lives, you will naturally feel less excitement from trying to stay alive.

When I hear about Cheat Death is coming I would think this game becomes more optional for specific group of players.

Cheat Death would be familiar for players who wants to explore the world and dealing wildlife. And when they died they would probably learn about this conseqence. With these extra lifes they getting the experience to deal with the previous death. And also that this journey comes to an end. For example. After being killed by the wolf, the wolf becomes more hostile and the player get the oppertunity for dealing them with care. Or dead by hypothermia, falling, poisining etc. I imagining that cheat death becomes more a deeper experience.

But for me who want to archive the 500 days on interloper. Cheat Death is not an option for me. So I tested an interloper run where I died on blackrock in the first day and play with cheat death. In the end the current sandbox stats shows that I survived 4 days. That is what I'm worried about. For achieving a fair run. I appreciate the "progress of archievments that require within a single game will be reset". And I wish the same thing for the Stats.

But hey. This is my first mind of the cheat death. Cheat death is the first introdution in the game. "First time" is never being perfect. Thats why i'm leaving this comment for some new ideas. Sometimes we just want a cozy run without a record of days.
