I think they should implement the cougar the same way, but just have it in one area. The area with its den. That is its territory if you enter the territory same scenario plays out. It spawns randomly at the beginning of each playthrough. If you destroy its den or kill it it respawn in a different territory after a certain amount of time. That way you can search for it but also be stalked by it.

That's an interesting idea, puts more emphasis on the player hunting the cougar than vice versa. But I think The Cougar was intended as a threat which hunts the survivor, not so much vice-versa: as there already are (basically all other wildlife in the game) that behave closer to this, especially Moose and Bear.

The two biggest issues I see with this idea are "gameplay balance" and "player feedback":

  • How would you communicate to the player which region is Cougar-infested, how long, and how/when it moves? The more dangerous a mob, the more player feedback it should have.
  • If the Cougar is only active in one region, it would probably need to be stronger/appear more frequently to compensate. This might be difficult to balance, especially across multiple game modes.
  • How would Cougar Den mapping work, would it show up or not show up? Would either of these be problematic for players who use the Map/rely on mapping, or players who never open the Map?
  • If the Cougar has variable region spawns in, all of those need to be tested and considered. e.g.:
    • Can it initially occupy the same region the player spawns in ?
    • How would initial spawning work on Interloper/Misery VS Pilgrim/Voyageur/Stalker which use different starting locations.
    • If the Cougar starts by occupying a region which 'traps' the player (e.g. Coastal Highway, if the player spawns in Desolation Point)
    • If the Cougar spawns in a 'prohibitive' region, like Forlorn Muskeg or Despolation Point, which players need to access Forging at the start of an Interloper game
    • How would "Cheat Death" work with Cougar spawning, and all of the above?

I dont really like that idea, they would keep the parts that the players dislike the most, just read the posts, watch the vids and you will get that many people dont like how its only killable after it mauls you etc...
