Why is Mathis so obsessed with Will? Are there no other people on Great Bear?

Maybe because he can fly, and partly because he thinks Will knows what's in the case..

Episode 4, because Will admits he is a pilot and Mathis wanted to use Will and/or his aircraft to escape Great Bear Island. "so you must have a plane" (sic?). I'd guess more the later than the former, seeing as he literally 🐺 throws Will out to the wolves 🐺 with no gear; if he valued Will himself (even if only for his piloting skills) IMO Mathis would have kept Will safe, at least as long as he was useful. But his reasoning could also be what he says later in the episode: "But here... we could be kings!", in that he no longer wants to escape GBI but to conquer it with his mooks.

Later on however, in Episode 4:

Mathis' obsession for Will changes to revenge, because of the Blackrock Prison being destroyed by bomb(s) Will and Jace planted, which injured Mathis' child (who is also incarcerated in Blackrock Prison)
