Nalliah
I am a very casual low-skill player-- but enjoy the game at this level. Just really out of curiosity--I wonder: 1. Playing in Mystery Lake-- in game distances, (miles if possible!) what is the distance from the Lake Cabin office to the Trapper's Cabin? 2. How many hours of daylight are there in each day? It seems like my char sleeps a lot, and its still dark out!
Serenity
According to the wiki it's 13 hours of daylight and 11 hours of night. Up to Stalker you can sleep for 12 hours, since that's how long your water lasts. You don't have to go to sleep right away when it's getting dark. There is still some hours to do stuff that requires light even when it doesn't seem like it. And during a clear night you can craft or read by moonlight. Some activities like preparing teas or sharpening blades also don't require light. If you don't have to do anything you can pass some hours to get more tired. The maps linked in the Wiki pages for regions have a scale on them, in metres (I believe?) so every map square is 100x100 metres. The maps are full of spoilers (some of which are now out of date) so this is your spoiler warning! A very rough eyeball count got me about 1.6 km from Camp Office to Trapper's, which is about a mile.
Nalliah
Thanks all for the information---it is just curiosity. I don't mind spoilers...I play at a very casual level and in fact sometimes go looking for spoilers!
xanna
Do you think it feels like a mile when you hike it in the game?
TonyInPleasantValley
For a healthy younger adult male, the average walking speed is about 3 miles per hour. So if the distance as calculated above is correct, it should take about 20 minutes in game time to go from point a to point b. I am guessing this is not possible, but am not in that area to pace it off...

ManicManiac
It's also worth noting that each "step" (our foot prints in the snow) is apparently meant to be "1 meter." I don't know for sure as I can't really dig into the games guts to see if that's one of the references anchors they built into it. Much like how dropping sticks is a cheeky way to have a "compass" of sorts. (though not something I'm not willing to take advantage of... I do think people should know it is/was there) Edited May 2, 2023 by ManicManiac

TonyInPleasantValley
Agree with all, however I don't think I can do that walk in under an hour game time. Could be wrong, but feels like that is going to take a couple of hours. I use cat tails, wood plugs, and ruined sewing kits to mark the trail. Will also use sticks and water bottles from time to time. Usually a unique item, like the sewing kit, to show the trail head, and then periodically drop tails or sticks in the direction I need to go. Has saved my bacon on a couple of occasions when I got caught in a sudden blizzard in a place I was less familiar with. Also saves times in places I am not in often as I get lost less often. Getting lost could mean the end of a run... Other consideration on that particular route is there are a number of ways to get there. I go from Camp Office to the rail, down to the Deadfall Area, cross over to the hill going up with the rocks and fallen tree, up to the top of the ridge, then follow the ridge over to the other side of the barn, down the hill and into the cabin. This avoids bears and I rarely get attacked by wolves on this route. Could also go down the tracks toward FM, hang a right at the tunnel, and around along the mountain side. I have run into a bear and wolves on this route, so I tend to go with the less dangerous route. Could also head the opposite way up the tracks, take a left at the bunny area, and then you have a number of ways there. The route I go seems shortest and less dangerous, so that is the way I would pace off next time I am in the area...
ManicManiac
I don't know if it's been mentioned already but the normal time scale for the game is 1:12. In other words 24 hours in-game = 2 hours real-time... Also: 12 hours in-game = 1 hour real-time, 1 hour in-game = 5 minutes real-time, 1 minute in-game = 5 seconds real-time, ...etc... Meaning distance unit "per hour" is also relative depending on if we are looking at it from our real-time or the game's time-scale. I would think that the math is pretty straight forward for any curious enough to want to calculate it. 🤭 Edited May 2, 2023 by ManicManiac
TonyInPleasantValley
OK, I just paced this off for you. From door to door, it took me roughly 4 minutes and 27 seconds. I don't think I can beat that time just walking. I might have shaved off a little time, but the bear was in the bunny area so I definitely needed to stay on the ridge. I can't believe that would have saved more than a second or two. So that is 267 seconds, divided by 5 gives us game minutes of 53.4 in-game minutes. So that comes out to 2.67 miles, given that I was walking at 3 MPH. I was lightly loaded at 35 of a possible 45 kilos, and I was at around 25% on the tired meter, which I don't think slows you down until it gets lower than that but not sure. This does not match the map information stated above, not sure why. Could be any number of factors/assumptions made. Got a bear to kill now...will do the reverse trip and report back but gotta think the results will be consistent. Also the sun/moon dial went from about 12 o'clock to about 1 o'clock, as best I could eye ball that...
TonyInPleasantValley
Oddly enough, I made it back a bit faster than above. I did not go up on the ridge, but instead (having killed the bear) went the bunny rabbit and more direct route. Time from door to door was 4:12 or 50.4 in-game minutes or about 2.52 miles. I did sprain an ankle on the way back but did not stop to heal.
