Can't get any mods to work besides one

I've been playing since launch with the base game.  I've decided to give mods a try.  It appears as if modsettings (and likely the other dependencies) causes my game to crash.  I don't even make it to the title screen.  Is this the case for everyone?  I've made sure I have everything updated.  Is there something else I can do?  Also, I've always thought it was silly to have whetstones wear down so quickly.  Is there a  mod that makes them permanent or more durable?
