Methuselah – Non-Core Character

I recently underwent surgery for an eye disease called Fuchs’ Corneal Dystrophy. I could not
drive or work for several weeks or do any of my favourite things. When I found out there was a
cosplay contest for TLD I decided this would be a good way to keep my mind off my failing
eyesight. I decided that Grey Mother would be a bit too on the nose, but I knew my father
would make a great Methuselah. Making the costume was very difficult as I could not thread a
needle on my own and became depressed. But it’s not over until the last match is spent, and as
my eyesight started to return I was able to pick myself up and finish the costume, and spend time with my dad..

Honestly for my first cosplay of anything I really wish I gave myself more time for the photos, but the costume came out better than I could have thought! I got into TLD way back in 2014 when I wanted to take a break from the constant zombies of other survival games, mostly because one side of my family grew up in frontier Alaska (which is where the rifle came from) and so I was always somewhat interested in winter survival. Now it's one of my top comfort games and I'm getting close to 100% on the achievements, and I always gush to my friends about the unmatched vibes this game brings to me. I remember during my rough college years there was a quote from one of the notes that really stuck with me and would brighten my day:

"Take a step. Walk because it's your destiny to make it out of here."

Survivalist Cosplay

Utilizing base layers of down and wool insulation, then external of wind and water resistance. A gorka top, and ski trousers. A bit of kit usually overlooked is eye protection so i used some ski gogles. Trusty, warm trigger mits and sturdy hiking boots. My pride and joy being the Canadian Longbranch No.4 Mk1* Enfield rifle chambered in 303 British. 

I had fun trying to get these photos done with my father(the photographer) last night. I hope these make it in time.

Submission category - Survival

A survival cosplay inspired by the interloper gameplay. The video includes cattail friction fire making, survival bow and traditional gear, which is what I like the most from the game. Hopefully we will see the friction fire in-game soon as well

The video is my main submission, but I will also include a couple pictures of the character as well. (There's a small blooper bit after the main video  )

I don't have much prior cosplay experience, apart from a few Fallout and Metro 2033 inspired "cosplays" I did when I was younger. I hobby hiking and handcrafts, did the bow and knife sheath myself while the rest of the gear is chosen from the hiking equipment I have accumulated for more traditional style hiking.

The long dark has been one of my favourite games ever since its release and as soon as I heard of the competition I just knew I had to find the time and take part!

Title: An Interloper’s Photo Journal

Day 38:

7:43 AM - Today I woke up and decided to treat myself with a cup of coffee. Since I’m running low, its not every day that I’ll allow myself to have some, but after my run-in with that bear a couple of days ago, I think I deserved it.

2:06 PM – After eating some of my left-over rabbit and mending my boots, I decided to explore a bit to get my leg moving again. Luckily the bear missed anything too important, but I know if I just stay in the cabin all day to rest, I’ll go crazy. After a hike that lasted longer than expected, I stopped at this peak to make a quick fire for some afternoon tea to prepare me for my decent.

4:19 PM – On my way back to the cabin, I started to feel the hair on the back of my neck start to stick up. After being out here for more than a month, I was more than familiar with being stalked. Once the wolf made himself know, I had no choice but to fight, since my leg was still on the mend and I couldn't. Luckily, I was able to take him down with my trusty hunting knife without major incident. Oh well, at least I’ve got another wolf hide to put towards my jacket.

6:27 PM – After a long day of travel and wolf fighting, I took some time to just appreciate this place. It might be inhospitable and constantly trying to break my spirits, but by golly if it isn’t beautiful. I hope I’m able to keep this perspective for however long I’m out here, wouldn’t want to end up a cynical old coot. Anyways, that’s another day in the books, time to hit the hay.

(PS you cant tell, but it was 90 degrees where I shot this so I was absolutely drenched in sweat after like 20 minutes of taking pictures)

I know I'm a little late here but figured I had to contribute.  First time I saw Methuselah on the screen I almost felt I was looking at myself.

Please forgive my grainy front-facing camera.  In my mind these pics were gonna look a little better.

Although I haven't had much time to play the game recently, the Long Dark still holds a pretty special place in my heart.  As someone who once fancied himself an artist, I often find myself lost in admiration of the art of the game, straying from tasks to take in the views and the little bits of detail in posters and such throughout the game.  I'm so grateful for you guys and the work you do.  Furthermore, playing this game has been a wonderful experience for my wife and myself as we have spent hours and hours side by side handing the controller back and forth to one another taking turns scavenging, exploring, surviving, bonding.

And as a thinking man of a certain faith I enjoy a lot of the content, tones, and themes.  (Even IF your rosary design wasn't entirely accurate ) to the point that early on in the game I found myself delirious and lost in a whiteout blizzard mere seconds from dying before I blindly stumbled up to the steps of a church.  An accidentally (perhaps?) profound little moment for my brain/heart...

Anyway, I dunno where I'm going with this so I'll stop rambling and I'm not even sure if I'm following directions on what I'm supposed to do with my submission anymore lol.  Thanks for looking, thanks for the game, and good luck to everybody in the contest!  It's neat to be in this community!

Hello everyone! 

I first became interested in The Long Dark when I sat to watch stacyplays’ play through with my sisters, back in 2014. I had not actually been able to play the game until the pandemic, when we were all stuck at home. I’m no gamer, but I was so enthralled that I couldn’t put the switch down for weeks. Since then, I’ve been able to share my love for the game with my friends and family, and convince them to try it out for themselves. 

 It was a lot of fun to try and bring Astrid to life, since she’s such an interesting character with mysterious yet noble intentions. Putting together the costume and making the props took a while, but it was an extremely enjoyable process. It took some time to find a suitable place to take the pictures since I live in San Diego, and pine/spruce trees are hard to come by. I’m incredibly grateful to Hinterland for creating this wonderful game and for being able to take part in this contest. I’m so excited to see where Story Mode goes next. Thank you!

So I'd never attempted any type of cosplay but figured I'd use this contest as way to spread my love for The Long Dark. Turns out it ended up being as difficult as when I first started playing the game minus the whole eating dog food thing.

I live in a 160 unit appartement complex right in the middle of the urban jungle so snow & outdoor shots were a nogo lol.

im very happy to see how many people participated and im blown away at some of the entries, well done to all.

I was first introduced to The Long Dark by my girlfriend, about two years ago during the pandemic. I have a lot of fun playing the game, and when I started Episode 4, Mathis definitely stood out to me as a unique antagonist. At least from what we know, he’s just cruel because he wants to be, which is honestly pretty rare to find in a villain. Trying to embody him was a bit difficult since I’ve never tried cosplay before, but it was fun to try different poses with Mathis in mind. The uniform and props are all handmade by my girlfriend and me, and a lot of love and care went into making them. Thanks to Hinterland for creating this game that brought me and those I love so much joy.

Day 17

Woke up to wolves howling outside today. Then scratching. Then the doorframe snapping. Thought I'd be safe in that shack, but that ended pretty quick. I grabbed my rifle, fired at the pack, and somehow managed to hit one of them in the dark. I fumbled around to grab what I could and ran. I've been trying to run from those beasts for a week now, but I can't shake em. 

Anyway, now that the sun is up, and I'm away from that deathtrap of a shack, I'm gonna take stock of what I've got; a can of pop, a knife, a rifle with 3 bullets, a revolver with 1 bullet, bedroll, a flare, and a sewing kit. 

Great, I'm even more screwed than I thought. 

Heard some distant howling, I think they might be following my trail. Nearly finished trying to patch up my jacket when I noticed I ran out of string. 

More howling, and it's closing in on me. Only way out is back down the hill where I came, so this might be my last stand. Well, if this is the end, might as well enjoy the pop now! If anyone finds this, sorry I don't have more to offer.
