Silent Fury...

@Leeanda

I don't remember perfectly (it's been a while since I've spent much time here), besides I think I do my best not to remember... I get to prolong that fresh sense of exploration that way.   I do have a good idea about where I am in reference to most of the major locations, but I try never to anticipate where any of the wolves (timber or otherwise) might be.  In either case, I thought that getting close to nightfall wasn't the time to find out. :D

I will likely do some scouting later; it will also be a more productive way to pass time as I wait to see what the fog is going to do.

I decided I should at least do some scouting around the nearby areas.  If the fog got thicker, I could just fall back to the cave I was hole up in.  If it abated, then I could make the next push towards the cannery.

I used the nearby rock formation to gain a better vantage.  I scanned from left to right...  I couldn't see any packs prowling around, but I didn't trust that.  I did start heading along the cliff walls heading off to the right (knowing that was where I'd need to go to get nearer the cannery).

As I made my way and able to better peek through the trees... I found that a Moose had lurking behind those trees just up ahead.  This is my first moose sighting for this run.  However, for right now I was going to see about avoiding it.  I watched it for a minute or so but wasn't able to get a good sense of where it was wandering too.  I thought I remembered this moose being farther up on (what would have been from that vantage point) my left... but I was clearly mistaken.

For the time being I'd opted to scout out around in the opposite direction until I got as far as I could along the frozen shoreline.  I did soon make way to another shallow cave and found the edge of the thin ice.  There is definitely know way I could find of getting to the other side of the inlet that way.  I'd have to go back and try to slip past the moose.

(Here was the spot I'd picked for my vantage point)

(When I went off to the right and spotted this fella, that's when I decided to see if there was a long way around to other side of the Inlet)

I eventually had to turn back once I found that weak ice was going to make it impossible to skirt the shoreline around to the other end of the Inlet.  By the time I'd gotten back to the transition cave, the fog had thankfully lifted, however a chilly wind took its place.  Thankfully, it was at my back most of the time.

Slipping past the moose would take patience.  I kept low and just kind of watched it for a while.  At first, I thought it might be easier to go wide (out on the ice/deltas).  However, I could have sworn I saw a bit of something move out there.  The moose kept milling about in that general area, but not straying too far in either direction to make either way safer bet.  I eventually opted to continue to keep close to the ridgeline.  As I approached and slowly worked my way forward (occasionally stopping to backpedal when it felt like it was heading in my direction and getting perhaps a little closer than my nerve would tolerate).

Eventually, I'd managed to slip passed him... I admit it was a tense few minutes.  Once I'd gotten clear, I spotted a hunter's blind.  Stopped by there just for a moment but didn't really find too much of interest (some shell casings of course, but not much else of note).  It was as I continued making my way onward and turned around that I noticed my first confirmed sighting of Timber Wolves (at least two of them).

Eventually, I'd found another shallow cave... this would be a good spot to hole up for the night.  I know the going has been slow, but I did need to stop off and work on preparing some water (I was almost out).  Thankfully, I had some water purification tablets.  I'd at least soon have 4 liters in about half the time. :D  So nice in a pinch.20220703104356_1.thumb.jpg.49bc8868b815e049fd006f6053d1f101.jpg

It turned out to be the right decision.  Not long had I gotten situated in that shallow cave, the weather had taken a turn for the worse.  By the time I had the fire going, it turned into a full-on blizzard.  I spend the rest of the evening preparing as much water as I could.  Tomorrow (assuming tolerable weather), I'm going to head for the cannery... or at the very least the nearby trailers so I can scout the best way inside.

-----

The next morning, I'd found that letting the fire burnout what a bad idea.  With the deep cold of the blizzard, I had been losing heat steadily for the last couple hours of my rest (though I'd only managed maybe 7 hours of sleep).  I knew it wouldn't take too long before I started freezing to death.  This would have to be a hard push.  I either have to make it to the trailers or get mauled to death trying.  I wasn't feeling in the best condition, and freezing was going to make that situation even more precarious.

At the second hunter's blind is where I took a good long look and decided this is where I would risk the crossing.

Off in the distance I could see Long Bridge... Cannery is just ahead.20220703152648_1.thumb.jpg.133898bb4f16b2f22e7ebe3e567fd9f9.jpg

Looking back... just for a moment. :D 20220703152945_1.thumb.jpg.18e839d0a1b3b351dc61d37cb98ff4ad.jpg

I opted to head up the slope... I wanted a better vantage, rather than continuing around to the road.20220703152955_1.thumb.jpg.f155f096d4ff93e60a8b971372d2da31.jpg

Once I got to the top, I took a quick look at the collapsed bridge and got a closer look at the cannery just up the road.  I also came across another unfortunate soul, but they didn't have much to leave behind but an orange soda. 🤭

As I shimmied down the slope towards the road, I headed for the trailers just across on the other side.  This would be where I would hole up (or at the very least warmup) and see if I can scout the best way into the cannery proper.

After warming up for a bit (finally taking the time to repair my leather gauntlets), I crept out close to the shore... but turned out to not be the vantage I needed.  Though, I did spot at least one pack of four moving along the ice not far from the cannery.
20220703162752_1.thumb.jpg.88e13aba10769117d8f41b8177645164.jpg

I opted to head back to the trailer and then out again, this time I headed up the slopes to get atop of the rock formation overlooking the cannery... this was the vantage I really needed.
20220703165315_1.thumb.jpg.44011a3ac58aaaf9bd227025e63e55d9.jpg

I couldn't believe it... the entire cannery appears to be empty!
Either the timber wolf pack was milling about elsewhere hunting... or no pack showed up today at all.
I wasn't going to let this opportunity go to waste.  If I could make inside the cannery, and get to the breakroom without firing a shot... I will not question providence.
20220703165620_1.thumb.jpg.e52413937293e3b7f00e842026875fb1.jpg

As I got just inside the perimeter, I noticed the paw prints in the snow... so a pack is here, just off skulking about elsewhere... but will likely be home again soon.

:coffee::fire::coffee:
Made it into the cannery safe and sound.  So far, I've managed to remain undetected, and haven't had to fire a shot.  Tomorrow, though, comes the onslaught.

I did what I could to while away the rest of the evening and spent the next day finishing up exploring the ground level of the cannery.  Managed to crack a safe, sort and stow what gear and supplies I'd found, but with it only being early evening... I decided to see if I could set off phase one of the timber wolf incursion. :D

Once I was finished taking a good look around, I used the rope to get to the second story... after gathering up what I could in there I decided to head back down (but without making any more progress on the path to the workshop).  If a pack had decided to invade the cannery... I didn't want to have to deal with more than one (especially if I can't hear them).

I decided to run and "jump" down to those shelves.  This way I didn't risk attracting more than one pack (at least, I'd hoped).
20220704081006_1.thumb.jpg.ff8746e1f327a1cac485e92503a004e2.jpg

As I went back out in the main "yard"... I already spotted two timber wolves.  I was going to try and take them out one at a time, hoping to avoid being beset upon by the entire pack.  The trouble was, I didn't know how many were in this pack.

I could have sworn I'd counted three... but after I'd taken down two and the third was running scared, I went out to take a better look at where they fell (starting to plan how I was going to harvest).  Suddenly I spotted four more!  They absolutely spotted me, and I had to backpedal into the yard and get ready to face the fury of the entire pack.  I'm certain the straggler from the last pack had joined this group... so I was counting having to deal with at least five.
20220704083112_1.thumb.jpg.9ae178beb24d6654a6eff00d9e084b7c.jpg
Dropped another inside the yard, two more outside, and ultimately wounded too more... it must have been when other two dropped and only one remained that the first wave of the onslaught was finally over.  So far, I may have been spotted once... but thankfully I made each shot count.

20220704085912_1.thumb.jpg.c0b0f99c6e1674957a3bce47626af13d.jpg

I spent the next day trying to harvest... it was then I realized I didn't bring a knife, and I hadn't found another one on the way.  I ended up burning up most of my supply of sticks getting the two in there in the hard mostly harvested.
20220704091751_1.thumb.jpg.54506a309f183d4a0103f4a27509bc31.jpg
This ended up taking the better part of the day, and I was short on firewood...

The next morning, I decided to leave the cannery and head over to the Cannery Worker Residences; with the hope of maybe finding a hunting knife.

It looks like I found one of the missing timber wolves... must have been one of the two that were injured.  This one made it a fairly long way before bleeding out.
20220704095101_1.thumb.jpg.2830f2b77eb9ad290c035955e338223c.jpg
Unfortunately, I didn't find a knife.  As much as it pains me, I may have to let them go to waste... and continue on dealing with the timber wolf packs until I can get to the workshop.  I don't know that I want to spend too many more days just looking for a knife only to have the carcasses turn rancid and expire anyway.  I guess I should have brought a knife with me, but I was sure I would have found one in Bleak Inlet by now... 🤔

:coffee::fire::coffee:
I returned to the Cannery Breakroom; in the morning I will continue on towards the Workshop.  It's likely that the onslaught will continue.

@Leeanda

It seems as though I wasn't as out of practice dealing with them as I thought.  I'm feeling better and better about going to map Keeper's Pass and Blackrock.

However, it does bother me for a hunt to go to waste, but I just don't have what I need to harvest all six of these poor timber wolves.  I guess harvesting them wasn't the point of facing off with them at the cannery... still though, would have preferred to have all that meat, hide, and raw gut.  😖 Oh well

Well, I hadn't gotten as far as climbing up to Pensive Lookout, or the even the Fallen Lighthouse.

You know... you make a great point.  There may be a chance to find one as I make my way to the workshop, or even one inside.  The drawback is that I'd need to continue culling timber wolves in the process, but I suppose that is the actual point of this particular side challenge.  :D

And you're right, if I did manage to even find a hatchet or hacksaw... then I could at least get to harvest the fallen timber wolves.

I'm sure that wolf will be there... I don't anticipate I'll be able to get the door unlocked anytime soon though.  The weather has been atrocious (at least for the purposes of auroras at any rate). :D

...secret path?... 🤔
I'm not sure I know of a secret path, just the usual second story maze run.

I did notice that on your pictures. At least the dusk/evening ones anyway.

I hope you don't miss one considering you have to rely solely on sight. Mind you half the time they're silent anyway.

The secret path isn't at the cannery. Sorry if I gave the wrong impression.

I thought you mightve tried up there as well as going to try the lighthouse and cabins.

Neck sprain might cause a few issues , very hard to bandage too🤔

Not sure how you sprain ears though!🙂

Sprained ears would be pretty hard to treat as well.  Maybe a trapdoor isn't such a good idea.😁

Wrestling? Not really, I’m more the bookish type, but I do sometimes sprain his ears when he gets me angry (such as during his boilathon). I have a short temper.
