dmajohnson
Whilst reading several interesting posts about random maps I thought about putting an idea 'out there'.Would it be possible (and in keeping with the developers plans) to be able to create a new region that was procedurally generated? Maybe some sort of artic tundra area that's of infinite (or thereabouts) size.A player could enter 'The Tundra' and wander as deep as they dare with the potential to be rewarded with random spawns of maybe food (dead animals) or corpses with loot on them. With it being a tundra there won't be any trees to speak of, so any fuel for fire would have to be taken with you. Then you also have the ominous task of finding your way back to the entry point, which would be a challenge in itself as it the map will change every time it's generated. Players would have to use ingenious methods of navigating their way back. You could have high score tables to see who has gone the furthest into the 'Tundra' as a kind of mini game
toebar
I think this is a fun idea. I agree it would be challenging environment, but I'm not convinced that the game area is far enough north to make access to it realistic. I have a feeling this is what you're looking for, but you have to go pretty far north https://www.google.ca/maps/place/YT-5,+Yukon,+Unorganized,+YT+Y0B/@67.009437,-136.213931,3a,75y,1.69h,84.47t/data=!3m4!1e1!3m2!1sIYfwyvGx1cSb0qpMPMHPig!2e0!4m2!3m1!1s0x51471a73f46aabff:0x3b1482e2ba58cf2bMaybe alpine tundra if you were able to climb some larger mountains.. A sheer cliff could also form the edge of the map? Still, this theme idea is good.
EternityTide
This would be interesting, but only as an afterthought. I want the main game finished before we start adding the icing.
Ryan CM
Here is a recent comment from Raph regarding procedural maps, from over on Steam"We made the choice early on to not have a procedural, randomized world because we wanted familiarizing yourself with the lay of the land to be part of the core experience of the game, similarly to how you might learn to navigate a new area around where you live when you first arrive and don't know it."(Bottom of page): http://steamcommunity.com/app/305620/di ... 295196/#p3
dmajohnson
Here is a recent comment from Raph regarding procedural maps, from over on Steam(Bottom of page): http://steamcommunity.com/app/305620/di ... 295196/#p3Yeah I did read that, and I totally agree...I thought as purely a sandbox feature it would be exciting... maybe something to consider for the future.toebar: Yes, something along those lines... lot's of 'nothingness' would really test the mettle of the hardcore survivors amongst us. Revantulet
Yes!! The problem with Hinterlands original plan is that once people become too familiar with the maps it gets boring. This is just obviously got to happen for long term replay value. I mean the mechanics of this game perfectly suit a random map!!
RossBondReturns
While I wouldn't be against random or procedurally generated maps...I must say that after over 1,000 hours of playing TLD, I am by no means bored of any of the maps already part of the game.
