The Midnight Sky (Netflix)

I found it a little slow/boring myself. I was curious about things that were happening, but nobody talked about it. It was okay though, I watched the entire thing.

Something I really did like was that they seemed to have someone on staff that had some knowledge about science and technology. From the rifle buttstock and spaceship having those AI created structures....and a few other things I don't actually remember right now. But yeah, so many shows have really bad science and really stupid characters so this one was nice to watch in that way.

I noticed the AI structures as well, pretty nice and realistic touch to portray humanities near future. Or to be a little more correct (technical anti-hype rant coming), just structures optimized through machine learning rather than "human learning" by letting a program very quickly test thousands of variants much faster than a human could. AI is when you have a robot use those solutions, this is more of a static use :)

Thanx 4 the recommendation, fun to watch but should have hired one or more actual scientists to dial back some of the mistakes.

"Arctic" is not exactly The Long Dark the movie but it has some of the same vibe.

(Spoiler below)

My best guess is that the 'catastrophe' is a sudden and simultaneous eruption of multiple supervolcanos around the world.  Any other ideas?

Spoilers here too....

I had the feeling that it was something humans did. The guy said "we didn't do a very good job while you were away" which to me suggests it is a man made disaster. Probably a project exploring some new field of science that was dangerous or something.

Yes you're completely correct in saying that it's machine learning not AI, I was inaccurate when I wrote that.

I learned some basic AI/ML (selfdriving 2D car with various "sensors") a couple of years ago and was utterly disappointed with the lack of actual intelligence in an AI. Machine learning is almost cooler than AIs though, so I appreciate them using that in a realistic manner at least ;)
