Shotgun

We know you guys do not want to make the game feel like a first person shooter, but a 3+1 or more capacity 12 gauge pump-action shotgun would be a good addition if not final addition to the firearms type items. Making this item and it's ammunition ultra rare would be a must. Maybe in a random truck or ranger tower/ranger lake cabin. 3 different ammunition types are a nice thing to have, Birdshot, Buckshot, and Slugs. Birdshot would be only effective on rabbits or maybe to stun/temporarily blind a wolf or bear with a very rare chance of that happening, as it has happened it real life. Buckshot should kill a deer within 40 metres with a hit to the chest and be a way to give more forgiveness accuracy wise when trying to hit a charging wolf, and in a real situation can stop a wolf with only a few pellets within 25 metres. If the Buckshot was 00 or 000 it could stop a charging black bear in one shell although 2 or 3 shots within 20 metres would be a lot more balanced and likely. Slugs would obviously be the most rare or most taxing to craft. A 12 gauge Slug, even a deer Slug, can stop a moose or charging bear in one shot. Although they are more inaccurate and less forgiving than Buckshot or Birdshot. Shotgun ammunition is easier to reload(craft) in real life than rifle ammunition in some situations. A Mossberg 500 or Remington 870 are staples of subsistence and woods living all over North America. And would be more widely available in a country like Canada than other Shotgun models. So those would be good models to base the Shotgun off. Or you could do a more tactical looking version of Shotgun that a ranger or police/sheriff department would use. If you read this thank you for your time and thank you for taking my suggestion into consideration.

Yeah shotguns have been debated to death in the past, and the general consensus is they don't really add anything to the game that doesn't already exist in some other form.  We currently have the rifle and bow for hunting, the revolver for dealing with wolves, stones to stun rabbits or cause a distraction, a flare gun as a panic button to scare off anything.  About the only thing we don't have is a melee option, apart from the episode 2 bear spear.

I personally would like to see a shotgun, but I don't think it should be a single shot. I think that a side-by-side or over-under shotgun would feel good. The multiple ammo types would be an issue(probably) and I think that maybe bird shot would be best, and like what derpyLemon said, if they did add a shotgun, they should add some more animals. I think geese and ducks would be a good addition to the wildlife and they could also give crows a hitbox and be allowed to get shot down, and you could maybe get 4-6 crow feathers from a single crow. But that's my take about the matter.

different ammo would be totally mess to code. single shot break action would be much easier.

I would like to get shotty, but i am sceptical. It wont probably happen.

I didn't think about the coding, you are right it would be a super hard to code. I guess I don't usually think of these things when adding suggestions. Thanks for enlighting me.

I don't think the game needs any more proper firearms at the moment. As of right now there are 5 animals, rabbits, deer, wolves, bears, and moose (Not counting crows, or timberwolves since crows can't really be interacted with other than collecting feathers, and timberwolves are just normal wolves that behave differently). Currently the rifle, bow and revolver are more than enough to handle all of the animals, some might require a little but more strategy sure, but still possible. If more firearms were to be added then first I think that more animals should be added, like elk, duck, geese, cougars, etc. Once some more wildlife gets added than maybe my opinion would change, but right now this gets a no from me.

Elk aren't up there. Caribou are though which are similar in size. Duck and Geese would be a great addition IMO. I'd like a grizzly as a super rare threat but those aren't up there either unless they had the island more Western based. It is balanced right now but I'd like a gun that would stop a black bear in one shot.

I've had all three on our homestead in Montana. The mossberg 500 A1 lasted the longest. But would be hard to code atleast ammo wise and a little OP unless they added a new map specifically catered to having to use the shotgun to survive. No deer just bear, Timberwolves, and small game, (geese and/or ducks added in as small game I mean, which would be awesome). But yeah probably won't be added and atleast not a pump. A nice thought for me though.

Double barrel offers interesting choice of "repair" shot of last chance.

Difference with single shot or double barrel would be condition of the gun. Less than 55 %, only one barrel is working. In other side, it sounds stupid. So single shot is easier way (probably more fit for abadoned area, than  "yet modern" pump action).

That sounds interesting. And yeah someone would probably want to take their Mossberg with them if feces hit the rotating metal blades. That's what I'd do anyway.

You got to be careful  about  the that's what I would do. As a eagle scout it just boggles  my  brain the amount of activity I could do but cant. End results me getting  tired of some dev guy interpretation of a survival situation. Let's face it 99% of the people that play this game wouldn't make it out of the plane crash. The 1% that do half die to being injured during crash.  The rest begin to dwindle cause it's cold  and wolves bite  em any that made it past the initial  bite. Infection sets in within days. I dont fly  so I wouldn't be in a plane crash period. Travel  is better  done myself is my motto now
