Ice Hole
There are many who are in The Long Dark that do not kill for the necessities such as food or clothing. Some will post pictures of countless wolf hides that spell out "HELP" on the ice. (Picture missing. I looked for an hour and cannot find it.) Others kill for profit. Consequences could limit the kill rate. When Crows Cry Crows can recognize your face. This has been tested and documented. The crows will even teach their offspring. Here is a simple killer consequence. Kill fifty critters and crows cry and warn other animals of a killer approaching. Predators will sneak up on you. Prey animals will flee. You will need to fish for awhile if you need to eat some protein. Appease the crows with boxes of crackers, maybe they will like you again and give you warning to the bear. Do you have a killer consequence? Delete from here. @Admin For some reason the videos are messing up the spoiler and it starts to nest them instead. Go ahead and delete this example once you recognize what is happening. one text in between spoilers I wanted two videos in spoilers and text in between them. two Consequences could limit the kill rate. WanderingPalm
That’s actually a really interesting mechanic, but I would think that the crows’ cries would alert wolves, bears, and moose, as well, if their brethren have been being killed lately. Maybe you wouldn’t need to appease the crows with crackers so much as just go X number of days without killing or harvesting an animal? Less realistic, maybe, since we’re operating on an accelerated timeline, but more practical than trying to find crackers. This would also mean that if you aren’t willing to wait the X days for the crows to stop warning wildlife away from you, you’re limited to hunting during blizzards, when the crows wouldn’t be out. And then you’re basically the ultimate predator, stalking bears in a blizzard, when they think they’ll be safe from you.
Enigma
That would work if we would be able to hunt birds. Otherwise the crows would use you to do their hunting and call out to inform it's companions of food. Maybe you could trow in the fact that the aurora messed-up animal behaviour, maybe then. For the sake of continuity trap lines would only work if they are far away from the player.
