Did you know that Voyageurs really existed?

I was reading up on canoes and stumbled over a mentioning of the Voyageurs. The word does not simply mean someone who is travelling (which is what I supposed), they were indeed a specific group of people who used canoes to transport fur especially in the french parts of Canada. I didn't know this and thought that others might have missed this aswell

They were the mountain men and long hunters of the Canadian north. They'd put on a toque, grab the fusil du chasse with some traps and head out on the canoe
