How long before you started mapping?

One idea that occurred to me recently was that screenshots could be useful for remembering a path between areas when there are few landmarks. This would record the exact lie of the land with hills and deadfall, etc. In real life a trick I always used as I was walking along a non-path area was to turn around a lot to see what it will look like on my return trip. It really helps!
