Bleeding wolf disappeared

Was out for a stroll in the woods and got jumped by a wolf, won the fight so the wolf ran away bleeding. Followed the blood-tracks until...the tracks stopped and the wolf had disappeared without a trace.

I understand that, technically, if you get to far away from the wolf it should be discarded at some point but I ran as fast as I could and followed the wolf but still he got to far away probably. This is something that should be looked at I think..
