How do you find your way around?

Hi! New to the game, loving it, yadda yadda yadda.. :mrgreen:

But anyway, if I start a game at Mystery Lake I seem to be under a curse where all directions lead back to the clearcut/logging camp area. After having looted everything in that area I'm pretty much doomed to die walking in circles in the snow. Once I stumbled upon the railroad tracks but by then I was exhausted and freezing and didn't last long.

Starting at the coastal road isn't so bad, you can see much further and there's lots of landmarks, I just mostly have to worry about getting mauled by wolves.
