I recently was playing the expanded area and had a good run, I decided to out onto the lake to try and investigate something in the distance I heard the ice start to crack and decided i should go back when I fell into the water and died. I feel this is a bit of a new player trap, there really was not enough warning, I don't think you need a sign, maybe just make the players walking uneven and make the ice fall through a function of how far out you are/how long you have been on ice.

The thin ice is just the border of the map from the ocean side. There's really no reason to go beyond the two islands... It might be a bit cruel but at least you won't die to it more than once. There is some sound warnings that you need to react to fairly quickly, so it's not like there isn't any warning at all.
