Wolf behavior observation

I've been pretty lucky so far in my current game.  I've (sadly) downed four bears, a few wolves, and too many rabbits and fish.  I'm drowning in meat and some of it is going off now so I've been leaving it outside in hopes that the wolves will back off and stop trying to eat me.  The thing is, they run away now like I'm the devil incarnate but at times they walk right past me, within half a meter's distance and make no move to attack.  If I move though, they run away yipping and crying.  What's going on here?  Is leaving meat around some sort of domestication/domination tactic with them?  Does anyone know?

Why sadly? And are you wearing a bearskin or wolfskin coat? Both have a chance to intimidate wolves and cause them to flee, I believe.

No, only rabbitskin mittens and deerskin boots at this point.  But I have plenty of wolf pelts and bearskins ready to be made up.  I've just been waiting for them to cure.  Just wearing normal stuff coat-wise.  Not even good stuff.

I say 'sadly' because it's usually easy enough to stay out of bears' paths.  With the first two, that wasn't the case.  I literally couldn't move from my location because they were constantly lurking outside.  It was me or them.  But the last two were accidents.  I thought the third one was the second bear I'd shot returning to finish me off.  I was too far from shelter so I took a really long snipe and he ran off the other way.  I saw the blood spray up so I knew I'd hit him solidly, even from that distance.  The fourth one was during the night.  He came out of nowhere and I just shot (because I always travel with my rifle in hand like a dork).  I didn't think one shot could even take a bear down tbh but I've now proven that that's not the case.  They actually go down pretty easily sometimes.

But what about the wolves?  They come really close to me and aren't afraid until I move.  I try not to move because I want to see what this is all about.

Are you playing on Pilgrim mode? Because that sounds like Pilgrim mode.

Voyageur and did you miss the bit about wolves trying to eat me at first?  Now that I'm leaving the rancid meat around, they sidle up to me but don't attack.  If I move, they run away literally yipping and crying.  That's the whole point of this post.  That's the behavior in question.

in customised you can change wolf fear. now that I think of it that may be referencing the odds of a wolf being scared when you throw a torch

I don't use torches.  I don't use flares.  I fight wolves hand to.. paw when I battle them, usually only using a prybar to fight them off.

I haven't even realized there's a customization thing. lol  These changes are all new to me.  I bought this game ages ago and left it off for a while as I became something of a Factorio addict for a while there.

But no, I haven't made any of those changes.

At the moment I have five wolves on top of the Quonset gas station.  That's such a goofy glitch.

This is something I've seen also while crouched on the "front porch" area of the Quonset gas station...after cautiously using the bow to kill 6-8 wolves and let the hide and gut stay on the ground, (I wanted to test if this would slow the wolf re-spawn rate). Instead, I saw some "dopey" live wolf behavior where they would walk past very, very close to me with zero aggression, as long as I did not move and was near the front door.

  • Is the stockpile of meat an "Anti-Decoy"
  • Is the wolf "deactivated" by a sudo-porch "Safe Zone"

While speaking of stockpiles, I have a question.

  • I have piles of bear meat at the lonely cabin at ML and it is never disturbed by wildlife.
  • In the same survival game, I stockpiled a quartered bear at the cabin beyond Un-Named Pond in ML, and upon return all meat was gone.

Q: Is it more likely the quartered bear meat was stolen by wolves or was it more likely lost/reset by a game update/patch?

@s7mar7in, I dont believe they steal meat from you unless they specifically saw you with their eyes drop said meat.

Id play it safe and place the meat in car trunks, its still considered "cold" by the game I believe. Just cook the raw meat a few at a time when you need them. Never wasted any bear using this method, I dont consume only 600 calories of it a day however.
