Alternative Bows

Hunting Bow: a very rare compound bow capable of killing large game (moose and bear); could require a higher archery skill level to use.

Hunting Arrows: arrows manufactured for hunting. They cause more damage and are more durable than simple arrows, but cannot be crafted. Harvesting broken hunting arrows yields only a simple arrowheads (the bent and dulled hunting arrowheads).

Competition Bow: either a recurve or reflex bow, made for target shooting; capable of bringing down a rabbit, deer, or wolf, but will only aggro bears and moose.

Competition Arrows: arrows manufactured for target shooting. They cause less damage, but are more durable than simple arrows. Harvesting broken competition arrows yields scrap metal.

*All of the above would not be craft-able.

@Rancid I'll take that into consideration in the future, but I'm leaving my current posts as they are (those are basically all my suggestions). Plus I assume they'll all drop down and scatter after a day or two anyway. I've also been told that Hinterland does actually read everything submitted here, so I don't think I've stopped someone else's idea from reaching them (definitely not my intention).

You really like weapons don't you;)

(I will be talking about your other gun ideas on this topic. Im too lazy to comment my opinion on every single one of the topics)

I think that the game shouldn't turn into a "shoot em up"game. Making more and more guns means that the devs ould have to make more bullets spawn and then hunting and surviving becomes too easy. You would have your own set of guns with a mountain of bullets.

One of the good thing about the distress pistol and the rifle is that they have limited amount of bullets. You have to think that "is it worth it to shoot that wolf there with my last bullet or should I save it for defending myself?"

Also a large amount of guns could be too complicated to some players and maybe turn away new players. Overall this is a game about surviving with what you find in the wild and not about getting some rifles and shotguns and bows and  go make deer go extinc.

Of course the rifle spawns could stay the same but the gun that spawns there would be obe random gun. But I hate RNG

However I kinda like the idea of competition bow. At least the different arrows to a normal bow could be a cool idea. Your lists are well made and you clearly know what you're talking about. Just try not to create too many seperate topics.:fire:

Nice idea! As @Mixxut said, I like the competition bow idea too. Could come in handy for obtaining pelts and food from small game and wolves (maybe)...

However, respecting the hunting bow, I don't find a clear use for it since you can kill bears and moose with normal bow with 1-2 shots if you aim right for the head/nose/neck (not my case though :( ) but being not craftable and I think a bit heavier than the survival bow (since it has more damage) could make it a potential idea :)

@Mixxut Those are all the threads I'm going to start for good while. If I need to expand on or explore another idea I'll just edit the existing ones. I also agree that players shouldn't have a glut of weapons, but I would like to see a bit more flavor added to the combat/hunting. Firearm ammunition should be rare, and the guns and bows I proposed should, if part of the game, all be rare finds (no guaranteed spawns, and only one or two can spawn in a sandbox; a bit like the prepper caches). Furthermore, finding one should be a blessing and curse, with players having to make hard decisions regarding how to carry on; "Do I take the lighter weapon or the heavier more lethal one?" "Do I hold onto this ammo for which I have no weapon, or leave it to make room for X, Y, and Z?" The exception to that would be the new hunting rifle I proposed (that's just a strait upgrade), but I think something like that should only spawn once per game, and only at the top of Timberwolf Mountain (or other equally dangerous and inaccessible areas).

Thanks for the input and cheers

@dragonslayer587 I had no idea you could kill a bear with the survival bow (efficiently at least). Can it also down a moose?

Perhaps the hunting bow could enjoy a significantly increased range, but at a noticeably heavier weight (which is basically true to life). People obviously can, and still sometimes do, hunt with recurve or reflex bows, but it tends to take years of practice to develop the necessary stalking skills.

@darkstarmike yes, it is possible to kill bear with the bow.. Personally I killed a bear once with one bow shot but just once! Normally it takes me 2-3 arrows... if I don't miss!

Respecting the moose, I found that (for me at least) it is a bit more difficult to bring down since it doesn't bleed out like other animals but I have seen people bring it down with 2 arrows in Youtube.. For me it took 5-6 arrows and two sets of broken ribs :(

I agree with you in that! Maybe it could have bow skill level 2-3 or something like that to use?

@dragonslayer587 Your last reminded me; I killed a moose yesterday with one shot from the rifle, at moderate range. I was behind it, and I shot it in the side, right behind its front-right leg. I suppose it could have been a head shot, and I just didn't notice. It reminded me of a video I've seen of moose being shot IRL, in a similar way: shot through the side (through both lungs and heart), and it stood and took few breaths, then just slumped down.

The thing is that you craft them

How does an average joe make a factory grade Recursive bow? I think we already have enough bows. I’d advocate for a more “man-made” kind of bow like the Hunting Bow that could be found
