Tbone555
So. magical long dark water. it doesn't freeze in sub arctic temps, it doesn't get hot when boiled.... what's up with that? With as cold as it is outside, a water bottle will easily freeze unless well insulated. and just throwing it into a backpack isn't well insulated. frozen water would be a huge concern in this climate, given the fact that here it only got down to 18 f last night and that bottle of water I left in the car is frozen solid this morning, and that's nothing compared to the long darks usual -15. so this is what I suggest - Insulated travel mugs, or insulated sleeves for your water bottles. make them a rare find. if you have them, they keep your water liquid for much longer, but it will still freeze after a full day outdoors. if you don't have them, your water will freeze much much faster. once frozen it will have to be re-melted at a fire. And after boiling water, it should be hot for a short time and give you a warming up bonus. what y'all think?
hozz1235
Realistically this makes sense but might be hard to program the game to keep track of all water in the game.

Just like it does keep track of all the clothes, left outside, getting wet and frozen? It wouldnt be hard at all. BUT This would really only apply to stationary water, and only for the one stored either outside, or in poorly insulated inside areas. Depending on the feels like in those buildings. No for the water that you have on yourself - this should be fairly obvious - the water you carry on yourself is in constant movement, this makes freezing fairly difficult - and even though it would eventually freeze, the backpack is not an uninsulated as you might think. Finally, most reasonable people would carry the bottle underneath their clothes, close to their body. This is an old trick that is, by the way, very useful to remember - because eating snow is a horrible idea, what you can do is put the snow into a bottle, and then carry that bottle close to your body. The body heat that you are losing anyways will then be used to turn the snow into the water.
hozz1235
Guess what I'm saying is that I'm sure Hinterland tried to make the game as realistic as possible but (I'm sure) design decisions were made for one reason or another.

The game already tracks item condition for most everything, so I don't see where any appreciable performance hit would be taken compared to any other item. Heck, they might even be able to just use the existing condition interface for water, where condition is the percentage frozen.
GreenBeing
We might end up with exploded soda and beer cans everywhere.... But yeah, I would love to have freezing water in the game. In truth, I don't think that we should even have to boil snow melt, as it should be already purified naturally. I like the game mechanic for having to boil it though...
