Hunting blood trails

I read the long post this time lol

I think it would be worth giving game animals the ability to bleed out for less then perfect shots or be crippled in bleed out from a leg or shoulder shot. After being shot there should be a trail of blood on the snow.

Here's some ball park numbers

A deer shot in the lungs could probably make it 50 yard before collapse. Have the deer run for the nearest woods and hills to make it a bit of a trek to find it.

For really bad shots like a gut shot it's not unreasonable for a deer to spend 30 minutes or longer running till it collapses from bleed out.

Now where this gets really important is with larger more dangerous game. If you don't cripple or kill a bear on your first shot it should be on you turning you into bear food. Fleeing is not unreasonable for longer shots or complete misses but so far hunting seems to happen at close ranges in this game.

+1 Sounds good.

You are right, hunting is close ranged so far. And I agree, there should be different ways for game to die. But I'm not sure how it is implemented right now. I think, each animal has only a single hitbox, so it's either hit = kill or miss = fleeing animal.

To change that, first we would have to implement different hitboxes and then set different deaths for each region upon hit. Additionally, if you had to track deer for a couple of minutes, you'd run into problems with the despawning code, since after a certain range, game and items will get despawned in order not to clutter the world, so that would need working on too. Coming to think of it, I think the current targetting system would also not allow this differentiation, at least, I'm never entirely sure where I'm shooting if I'm not below 15m away from my target. :D

So for now, while I do think the idea is nice and worthwhile, the utmost we will see is that shot game will not drop dead, but run for a couple of seconds before collapsing.

I agree with this idea. As for hitboxes and so on:

I think animals have many hitboxes, but they have the same parameters, because the realistic hunting mechanics was/isn't the dev. priority (for now). Of course the devs won't leave it like that, it would be a very strange thing to do, to say at least.

From my experience animals don't get despawned until they are in your field of view. In any case, I suppose the only thing that will need to be added is a checkup for boolean variable "despawnable" or "isForDespawn". This variable should also be added to animal entity and be set to 1 by default. In case you hit the animal its despawn flag will be set to 0.
