Craft-able Items

One of the main problems of this game that many people have pointed out so far is that items degrade WAY faster than they should. For example, after about 10 cans your can opener breaks. My idea to fix this would be to have simple craft-able items for early game that degrade quickly and rarer but more realistically degrading tools for mid and late game.

it would be not too hard to implement. My idea would be to just change "scavenge wood" to a "scavenge" menu that includes scavenging stones and/or metal. Then add a small, simple craft menu that lets you make basic stone and scrap metal versions of the tools already in game, such as a stone hatchet with some wood, a stone and some cloth or leather.

To be more realistic, don't allow specialty tools such as can openers or guns to be crafted (though a craft-able bow would be nice). Instead have multiple uses for simple tools. A scrap metal knife could be used for harvesting meat and for opening cans, for instance.

The problem with this idea is that it would be hard to explain in the harsh conditions of Northern Canada. Maybe if you have found a mine you could find stone and/or metal; however there is a problem with metal. You could either have it scavenged as an ore and had to smelt it to be useful; or scavenge it as scrap metal from stuff like furniture indoors. The second one would make sense and would be easy to make. Idea with ore is very unlikely to even get a second thought, because you would need modern day mining and smelting equipment, which both use electricity. There are already plans for crafting, that why there is a crafting table in Trapper's Homestead, however materials will most likely be only: cloth, leather, scrap metal and description of guts suggest it could be used for something.

Game itself should make a rifle something like a Holy Grail and concentrate more on hand-made weapons like bow and arrows, spears, etc.

The thing that i love more in this game is...TO NOT CRAFT!

Stop crafting all please...i think that repair clotes and some stuff is enought..

And on trappers home there is a table where probably we can do more..hope not so much.

This game is different from the forest, different from all minecraft clone. Is a survival.

No time to craft..but search and use what you find.

I agree that you should find and repair stuff, however in my opinion the rifle feels to be a little bit to common. As of right now we can kill wolves with either a gun or by hand - there's no in between. It would kill the game to add a lot of crafting, however it wouldn't hurt to have some sort of weapon, even a sharp stick to stab close to wolf or throw at it.

Maybe "crafting" could be considered a higher fidelity "repair"? You can repair in more measured and accurate ways. e.g. a rifle or can opener needs some precise work to get it to function better or different.

Surgery VS a Band-Aid is the comparison I'm thinking of.

Unless your character is a craftsman the crafting should be limited, initially. IMHO.

My opinion is that we need only more objecft to find

Crafting is perfect like now, just harvest and repair. You need to move to find objects, to explore, this is the feel of the game i think.

And remember that there is a work table that say us "not available in alpha"

Hope that table give us just a little more as for example a over 100% fix (limit 120%)

Don't wanna see this game become a MINE-FOREST ecc

About wolves using knife will be good for me:

-with knife equipped you have to press less time the left mouse to full the bar

but ..for example you loose the knife...or it lost 50% for example.

Since the devs have been working on implementing crafting for some time now (and this is what that workbench is going to be used for), I'm pretty sure it is going to get implemented. But you shouldn't expect anything like minecraft or other games where you can just about build anything.

To me it seems like crafting is missing in the game right now. What purpose is there to being able to take the hide of a dead animal and not be able to use it for anything. The only thing you can do with leather right now is repair shoes. Without having taken the hide of any animal, I already have a pile of unused leather laying around. So yeah, I want to be able to do something with it, and making clothes seems a logical thing to me.

If after playing 50+ days you run out of clothes and you have a pile of leather laying around, would you not at least wrap it around you to protect yourself from the elements? I would, if that's all I had. And to make wearing those pieces of leather easier, I'd make clothes out of them. The people that lived during the ice age used animal skins to make clothes that kept them warm during those very cold times, why should I not be able to do the same thing?

Well some kind of makeshift knifes or hatchets would also be excellent. I have no idea yet how elaborate the crafting system the devs have in mind is going to be, so let's wait and see, shouldn't be long before we can make up our minds and then rediscuss this issue. :)

Yes, making knives and hatchets would be very useful especially on long runs. I don't know it there is any flint to be found in the Canadian mountains, but it's not that hard to make a serviceable knife out of a piece of flint. A hatchet would be harder but still doable with a bit of practice.

I'm just not expecting things like mining for iron, so I expect crafting will be limited to the materials we can easily gather.

I should hope so, because mining iron ore and then burning out the impurities would be a lot of work and I don't think I would enjoy having to go through all these steps myself, besides finding enough food, water and fuel, simply to create a lower grade blade or hatchet. :)
